new to reloading/new to the forum

hi everyone, i wanted to say hi and introduce myself. ive been trolling on this sight for i dont know how long. great site without a doubt in my mind. ive been shooting for years. but just got into reloading. its very new to me. hi,

ipurchased the rcbs die set for 30-06.

to adjust how far the bullet is seated into the case, i adjust the bullet seat plug with a screw driver.

my question is, how do i know how far to turn the seat plug to equal 1/1000. or how far does one complete revolution of the plug equal in seat depth? you know what i mean? thanks.

First of all welcome!
I haven’t used any rcbs dies in so long I don’t know the thread pitch. It’s easy enough to figure out though if you can measure or find out what the thread pitch is. Just pulling numbers out of the air. Lets say its 28 threads per inch. 1’ divided by 28 = approximately .036” per revolution.

I've been a handloader for almost half a century..and run all over in calibers..bullet caster as well due to the fact I love old calibers more than new. Load shotgun as well and I hate steel..so I when needed...load tungsten and load what I can't or won't buy... Now live in north east Kentucky, want to bird hunt again..I'm not high budget...20ga - 12ga. 2-3/4 in loads...with tungsten why waste shot...

As you progress with your hand loading skills it may be beneficial to move to a seater die with a micrometer adjustable top. Most all of the name brands are accurately marked per .001

brian,

thank you for the warm welcome. and thank you for the answer, that was exactly what i was looking for. oh and you were off by 2, there are 30 threads in 1 inch. not bad at all. i must say.
If you have a depth mic you could measure the stem height once you had a starting point ie seat one bullet and measure oal then adjust stem height.

Hopefully the original poster has figured out his issues in the 13.5 YEARS since he posted. If not, I’m sure he will take your suggestion into consideration. Lol.

Yep...I read a thread on muzzle loaders on here...not like any ml I own....so yes casters are powder coating...moly coating was a rage...I like to see what others are doing ...I'm still hoping to find a slug gun w all the gear...false muzzle, molds, swage for the two piece bullet of different alloy,. Side lock .. I've read too many old books

Hey everyone - introducing myself - fairly new to reloading and seem to always be thinking about different aspects of reloading every time I sit down and reload a box of anything. I reload several rifle and handgun loads. I always stay to the low side of loads — plinking and trying to get better with each box of lead. Typically I have been using US Reloading and Everglades bullets and sometimes will have a box of Berry or another name brand bullet - they all have put holes in the paper and drained a plastic bottle of water - but have been noticing a sometime huge difference in the length of the bullets and understand the difference in pressure that it creates. Guess my question is - how or what difference does the bullet make if the OALof loaded bullet is the same and within the guidelines of the referenced load data from the book?
thanks to all and stay safe out there - getting to be a crazy world

If two bullets are of equal weight and one is longer, and you seat with the bullet tip at the same overall length, the extra length is in the case and that reduces the volume in the case, increasing pressure. Any time I do that sort of thing I start that load low and work up again.

If the bullet is longer and also heavier, the same powder charge probably won’t work anyway and I start low and work up a fresh charge weight. Again, reduced chamber volume due to space taken by the longer bullet will increase pressure, and the extra weight will take longer time to get down the barrel, which for the same powder leads to the peak pressure releasing in a smaller volume, which again can increase pressure. (Or not - but why gamble?)

There are analytical reloading tools like Quickload and GRT tools that can calculate these things but unless you do it all the time and are collecting chronograph data they’re not worth the trouble.

Generally when I change bullets I assume pressure will go up and I start from fresh load data. Better safe than maimed.
