New to benchrest, any help

Just started practicing 22lr benchrest with my grandson, mostly due to back injuries. Here is a target from our last 50 yard shoot, both of us are shooting about the same groups form this to 1/2" depending on wind.
Guns are factory stock Winchester 52B HB with an old Balvar 24, other gun is a stock Remington 40xr with an Unertl 12x target scope. No bedding or trigger jobs on either gun. Both shooting off sand bags no rear bag.
Ammo is Winchester T22.
Would it be worth getting these guns bedded and maybe better scopes?

I'd say yes. With a better scope and a flat forend plate and a tuner you could jump right in and see if it's somthing you like to do. If not, the beding will help make it more consistent shooter without dumping lots of cash into them. The 40x would be the best canident for a bench gun mainly because you can put a better trigger in it. Just be carefule how much $ you put into them. To many upgrades and your into custom rifle money. It's also hard to recover money spent on 40s and 52s.

Well how about this..... Before you spend a dime on more gun stuff, in order to see what you really have, get yourself a half decent rest and rear bag which won't break the bank and get 3-4 windflags.
Practice gun handling on a stable setup, after than invest a little in decent ammo. Sandbags with no rear bag won't be the way to go.
After you do that, if you and junior are having fun, you'd be farther ahead selling the two you have and investing in a low miles, purpose built benchrest 22 rifle for little or no extra $.

Thanks guys, I bought a Caldwell rock rest since midway had them on sale and got Birthday discount.
Which rear bag would be the best? Not sure which one to buy and might as well get a good one now.
Also picked up a few boxes of elegy red box, best target ammo I could find around here.

Edgewood makes good bags. I have a mini gator and I like it.

On the bag just call Protektor tell them what your shooting and what type of shooting you will be doing and they will make you one.For my shooting I use SEB.
