New to 6mmBR

Hi guys

Thought I would come onto the forum and just see what people think and if they have any suggestions. I'm currently having a 6mmBR barrel put into my Sako 85 laminated varmint. I have opted for a Trueflite 26" finished length 1:10 twist. Being built with a no turn neck. The gun will be used exclusively for varmint shooting out to about 400 metres. I am using Lapua brass and CCI benchrest primers. I have a few different projectiles I'm trying. Lapua 77gr fbhp, 87gr and 65gr V-Max and 70gr Nosler Varmageddon pills. I'm using Redding type S neck bushing dies. Any thoughts or tips would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I shoot a 10 twist straight 6 BR in varmint matches here. Have a few of thoughts for you.

First, make sure that the reamer used for your chamber has freebore matched to the bullets that you want to use. You want to be able to get 15 thou of jam with the bullet in the neck and you want to be able to get just off the lands with the base of the bullet above the donut. Doing it with a bunch of different bullets is tedious.

I suggest that you look at the Sierra 85 gr HPBT for a super all-around varmint bullet. I have also had success with the Berger 87 VLD Hunting and the Berger 90 BT Match.

Push them with H4895, IMR 8208 XBR, Varget, Reloader 15, and the like. I've had great success with the XBR and it flows like water through my ChargeMaster. Varget is hard to beat across a range of bullet weights, though.

I suggest that you move to CCI 450s or Tula SRM if you have any problems piercing primers.

Look your cases over to make sure that the flash holes are not partially blocked. Verify that they are within trim-to to max length every loading. I, personally, just trim every time. Long cases turn a good performing load into an over-pressure situation pretty quickly.

I suggest starting with about 2 thou of neck tension and the bullets jammed about 10-12 thou into the lands. Shoot a couple of three shot groups incrementing powder by 0.3 grains from somewhat mild to warm. Somewhere in there you should see two or three whose centers are at almost the same vertical position WRT the bull. Verify those. If they hold up, pick the middle and tweak your seating depth 2-3 thou at a time to try to shrink the group.

welcome to THE most informative forum on all things re shooting and handloading. search "6mmBR" and the "articles" and you will still be reading three days later. ask any and all questions and you will get responses, most good and some??? my varmint 6mmBR is my favorite gun to shoot at paper and varmints.

Read this at least 6 times: http://www.accurateshooter.com/cartridge-guides/6mmbr/ The more you read it, the more details you'll pick up and retain. Then save it as a reference guide for future use. Everything you need to know about the 6mmBR is right there. Enjoy! :)
