New to 308 win Update

I was dying to shoot this new barrel a little bit, and use my new wilson seating dies... so i loaded up some 155 bergers with varget... 44gr, 45gr, 46gr, and 47gr..

It was really windy... so it wasnt great conditions for really testing loads.. i had to dial in for wind... 200 yards... first 3 shots to sight it in good enough to shoot paper... then shot 5 shot groups with each load... pics show 44 and 46gr groups... 45gr was all over, 47gr may shoot... but i was fighting the wind more... shots keps walking to the right.. which was where the wind was coming from so i think wind was slowing down slowly in the 47 string... gotts shoot again anyways...

All groups were one after another no wait time... i tried to shoot the groups in lulls in the wind... no no major testing here... but it looks promising... i just did a quick seating depth measurment and went with it... so still got that to tinker with too... none the less i think when i find the right load it will bug hole very well! 22 inch kreiger heavy varmint... defiance machine action, manners stock.. only had a fixed 10x scope on it.. nothing fancy right now..

disclaimer - the one flyer on the 46gr pic was totally me... i knew it right away..

I think you are heading in the right direction. But you are way over the hornady manual. I don't know if you live in a warm climate or cold but the loads higher than44.0 grains could be over pressure in hot weather. Just keep in mind to look for pressure signs and work up from a lesser load till pressure rears its ugly head. I don't have my berger manual present and maybe their bullet can be shot with a high charge but It makes me nervous. I hope someone jumps in and says it is a good load and where they got that imfo.

Your loads, ever the 47gr load are completely safe. You need to pick a calm day to test loads - a strong wind means you learn nothing.

Hodgdon data said 47gr was fine... im not worried... i didnt see much pressure signs... 47gr put a little bit of flattening on the primers but not enough to worry about... ive seen real flat primers before and its nothing like that... no issues at all with bolt lift either...

Yep def need a calmer day...

Depending on the temp I need upwards of 47.0g Varget w/ a 155 to get my cold temp load to be that of my summer load.

The original Palma loading was 45.3 grs. Mulwex 2208 with the Sierra 155 bullet. I've been shooting 47.0 grs. for years! In 100F+ temps....primers will show flattening! Mulwex 2208 is Varget.

Bob Jensen loaded over 300,000 rounds for the 1992 Palma Match at Raton, NM. 44.8 IMR 4895, Fed 210 primer , Sierra 155 for a velocity of 2980 fps. Sierra was asked to make the 155 bullet for the 1991 practice Palma Match. Wichester made a special run of brass for this match.

Hornady must be way to conservative. Hodgdon is higher so I guess you are good. Thanks to all on specifying that the load is safe.
