New Short Range Toy (update)

Shooting short range is new for me and I thought I Tinkerr with a new toy I acquired last weekend. I figured since it's short range there was no need in having a full gun so I horse traded around for half of a gun.

Of course it's a tight neck so I had to order a neck turner to turn 6 BR brass. The turner arrived today and after messing up 4-5 cases trying to get it set just how I wanted it, I turned 25 cases and fired formed 6 of them.

After I got the cases fire formed I dropped five charges using my old Redding BR30 powder measurer and went back out to the shooting bench. I haveto say its a bit awkward shooting this thing and I'm unsure as of yet how to go about getting in on it and getting a good feel of what I need to do to acquire the best and consistent hold possible.
Anyhow the gun is a savage Striker with a shilen 1-13 twist x17" .269 neck chambered in a 6BR. The stock I believe is a 7Fingers and it has a Timney trigger set at 6ozs.

Here's the gun setup, I bought some delrin and used the table saw to machine a slot in it to fit the stock in so I'd have a 3" wide surface to use with my rests.

Now here's the first five shot group out of the gun. Powder used was H322 and I'm unsure of charge it's between 27.0-27.5 grns using a 68 grn. Hillbilly BT match bullet. This group was shot without the 3" delrin attached to it so it was to me a bit unstable to hold.

One more with target and gun.

Re: New Short Range Toy

I've been tinkering with the rear rest setup on this new rig, it had a tapered block to help with adjusting elevation, since I do all my adjustments via my front rest I made a new block from cedar that's flat and it appears to work better for me. I shot these series of five shot groups today. Each series is approximately .5 grns difference in charge weight. I'm dropping the charges from a redding BR30 powder dispenser so I don't really know exact charges.

Looks like it has some serious promise there James. :)

If you try any of that LT32, let me know how it does. Still can't find a 1# nearby. :( Am anxious to give it a try. WD

Nice 7Fingers stock and rifle. Go to Specialty Pistol Forum for guys who can welcome you to the clan.

Last weekend I managed to get the short range toy out while I was allowing the barrels cool down on my long range rifles and tested the LT-32 using the Hillbilly 68 grain FB. Although these are only 3 shot load development loads there's potential. All groups were shot without wind flags as I had them spread out to 500 yards.

The top left is the start load and I have no idea what the other loads are as they are in clicks on my Harrell's dispenser. But number 4 is litterly one hole and that one hole all alone that was a sighter shot.

Weird looking toy, but nothing untidy about the #4 group. Wouldn't you like all groups to look like that? Neck tension [applied through use of a full length busing die] and seating depth adjustments can change cloverleaf groups into one hole groups. Nice shooting. ;)

Tested again this morning with the LT-32 load I had shot the other day. I even weighed a change to see what it actually is and it came in at 30.4 grains.
This handgun is a shooter and if there were a way to get this dang trigger down to something in the 1-3 oz range it be one heck of a consistent shooter. I'm not sure if the shots are my load tunes or me trying to get the perfect feel on the trigger and pulling the shot a bit. It was roughly 15* cooler this am than the day I shot that one hole group last weekend. So it may been I need to up the charge by a click on the dispenser.

Here are 4 consecutive 5 shot groups that I shot this morning.

That gun is a shooter and its a savage, imagine that. I am surprised that certain guys on here didn't tell you that a savage isn't capable of good accuracy. The only trigger I know of is the SSS trigger that they have to install. The others once down to 8 ounces are dangerous as you can close the bolt and it will go off.

As far as replacing the trigger, try a Rifle Basix. You'll love it.
And for your information, that rig you have will give a long range rifle a REAL run for your money. Make a few of them pack up and go home in shame. 8) 8) Do that a few times and you'll be hooked for life! ;)

I did another test today this time comparing between two powders of which will hold most consistency. Of course this is just two 5 shot groups for each powder so nothing as for future proof on which will hold most consistency. I even upped the charge 1 click on both dispensers to accommodate for the slightly lower temps from testing back in September. So far by a slight edge the H322 seems to show better pattern in groups and tighter groups.

Great shootin' and load development there James.

Now I'll be curious to see what you settle on. ;) WD

Thanks,

I think next I may try some 4198 and see how it likes that. And then go slower with maybe benchmark and 8208. But right now it'll be hard pressed to top either the H322 and LT 32

I may even stretch it out to 500 and just see how well it really does shoot this point blank stuff to me is boring.

Only 3 shot groups testing 8208 in this handgun and to appears to like the powder as well. The bottom right is 4 shots as I pulled the one with arrow pointing at it. This is 3 powders I've tried and nothing has been close to 1/4" at 100 yards.
