new shooter

hi i am just starting looking into shooting. my older borother, who is in the army overin iraq) and i both want to build up a long range rifle. and i have done a little research on it and it looks like the 6ppc round is a pretty good way to go and i was wondering on your guyses thoughts on it? but i am a farly unexperienced shooter, i shoot on the weekends but nothing to serious, and i was wondering what i should be doing and what things i should be looking into if i want to become a serious threat at 600 plus yards?

The PPC would not be as good of a choice as 6 X 47 Shehane or one of the other 6 mm cases based on the 6 BR. The 600 yd. shot will require a longer heavier bullet than the PPC s normally shoot. Like the 105 s or so.The PPC would be better suited for 100 and 200 yd shots where the short lighter flat based bullets will stabilize early on. Hope this helps with your decision.

I would suggest a 6mmBR standard to start with. Great accuracy and easy to tune. Just have a no-turn neck chambering,1~8" twist tube and get started on the fun...

But a 6mmBR is not easy to feed reliably from a magazine... what a 6,5x47 Lapua does easily. And shoot equally well at 600 yards, with more barrel life.

Have you started reloading yet? If not, I would look into a standard factory round,.223, .243, 6mmbr,lapua and norma make loaded rounds), .260 rem, .308) Any of these will get you there. The .223 will do it for a minimum of cost, and will teach you a lot about wind doping and won't break the bank or burn a bunch of barrels figuring out the subtlties of relaoding. Plenty of really accurate ammo out there from Black Hills, Buffalo Bore, Hornady, etc...Not the best 1000yd round, however. The 6br or variant or .308 will be much better suited with the high b.c. bullets available.
If you have started reloading then you are limited only by your wallet ie: do you go with a custom barrel in a wildcat chambering and have to get custom dies,etc...
If you are really looking to build from scratch you will find a TON of info on this site that will lead you in the right direction.
If you want a great platform to start from the new Savages are offering some great chamberings that will get you to 600yds and beyond for a, relatively, minor investment.
My brother in law and I just tried our hands at 550yd shooting with our .223 savages. Mine has had some work done to it and with handloads I was able to produce 5" and 4" groups. My brother in law's with a bedding job and remanufactured Black hills was in the 8-9" range.

hope this helps a little,
Mike
