New Savage Benchrest Rifle

Hard to tell from the photo on yesterday's Daily Bulletin. Does the new Savage Benchrest dual port rifle have a 3" wide fore end? If so, I question whether it should be allowed in our factory class groundhog matches.

Yes, the forearm is 3" wide, give or take a couple milimeters.

With the revised, and I think improved) stock, this could be a real contender in factory class. I think the forearm should be about 2" longer, but other than that, I like the stock a lot.

Do you know what the weight is?

WOuld be great to have it available with a shorter barrel option, too. A 6mm BR that would make the 10-pound class would qualify for IBS Varmint Hunter and a .308 would make Hunter Benchrest. Those two classes are not well populated in the Northeast and a factory gun might make in easier. Not much chance the long tube will make weight, though.

Might even make an interesting "spec rifle" ... naw, let's not go there again.

My thanks to Savage for listening to the shooting public. What a novel idea.

You know, I think that option is available. It's called a bandsaw and a muzzle facing tool,I don't turn off excess length on my lathe).

Oh, I also shoot those matches.. We are fortunate to have so many events in our area. I'm sure there will be some new savages signed up for the factory class. I think a 3" forend is ok so long as others without are allowed to use adapters. But NOT for deer hunter class

Just a wild guess... but from looking at the rifle configuration, weight, barrel length, stock config) they,Savage) probably aren't talking 100-300yd group/score 'Benchrest' so much as they are 600-1000yd 'Benchrest'.

Milanuk, I am not aware of any IBS sanctioned 600yd matches that offer competition for Varmint Hunter or Hunter Class.
My post was addressing ReedG's comment that these new rifles would be legal for VH and H Class score shoots. If the stocks are 3" wide and the receivers are solid bottom they don't qualify.

So... they would compete in the regular Light/Heavy Gun classes, correct?

Don't see a problem with that. ;)

Right you are DocEd ... I always forget about the "magazine" requirements in Hunter and Varmint Hunter. I knew about the 3" stock, but that can be fixed.

These rifles might be competitive in 100-/200-/300-yd. HBR and VH classes with 6X scopes, but certainly do not stand any chance at all in VFS or LV/HV.

Hope they fit into some of the longer-range classes, like to see them in competition.

I would like to respond to the new savage rifle issue

First of all, I am thrilled that savage trying to create a benchrest rifle that the masses can afford.

My opinion they need to decide if they are building a short range,100,200,300 Yd) or a long-range rifle.

As has been stated, the forearm is too wide for the hunter class in the IBS short range.
The design of the stock from the toe to the bottom of the pistol grip would conform to the rules.

You could use it in the IBS varmint for score or group, light or heavy depends upon the weight of the rifle).

As of now, you see a few of them being use in the groundhog matches, with the F class type stocks being shot in the factory class,
They do not conform to the deer hunter class rules.

You could use it in the 600 yd. and 1000 yd. IBS matches, however. I would not want the new stock design.
I would want the F class stock design, where from the toe to the bottom of the pistol grip is flat and parallel with the forearm.

If they were trying to come up with a better Groundhog match, 600 yd. or 1000 yard Rifle.

They should have stayed with the F class stock,

But made sure that from the bottom of the pistol grip to the toe of the stock was the same width so it would ride a rear bag better than the design they have now.
,I have been told it is narrow at the bottom of the pistol grip and gets wider to the toe).
That's all they needed to change.,Just check out McMillan or a Shehane Tracker)

I have a few custom guns that I have been participating with in the groundhog and 600 yards matches.

And have been wanting to buy a factory class gun, And I have been waiting for Savage new design.
Most of the savage rifles I see shoot very well for a factory gun.

As it is I would not buy one, However, if they modify and use the F class stock.
I would be very interested.

Also since the biggest caliber that savage offers is a 6.5x284 not a big magnum.
I do agree that the need to make the ejecter port smaller.

Just my opinion
John

In my opinion there is such a small customer base for true BR rifles, be they short or longrange, that no commercial firearms manufacturer is going to go through the expense of building one.
NRA "F" class has really taken off and it makes sense that Savage, and maybe some others, would consider offering a rifle for that discipline.

I have a savage in a 308 f-class rifle and I see they
have a 6BR rifle coming out, Question"---> has anyone seen any kind of report on the groups this rifle is shooting?

I know the 6BR is a shooter, I have seen them shoot in match's, but haven't seen anything on Savage New 6BR any were.

I think that large port is a benefit to the Savages since many people swap out barrels on them, they might be able to throw in a bigger round for 1000yd br.
