New Savage 6BR-OK with loaded **Norma** ammo?

My mistake - make that loaded NORMA 90g ammo. I will pass along any info. rec'd.

Greetings- trying to help a shooter with a new Savage LRPV in 6BR...will it run loaded Lapua 90 g loaded ammo - good, well, or not at all? It has a 1/12 twist - will it stabilize that weight? Any knowledge about Savage chamber/neck dimensions/throat- Fellow is currently on active duty in Iraq, has bought loaded Lapua ammo to use in his new Savage... He will be in U.S. on leave for a brief time & not much time to fool around with loads. He wants to know what size bushing to use to re-size his once fired Lapua brass-I use a a .267"--any suggestions or advise? Thanks.

CTshooter -

Try this web-site. http://www.savageshooters.com/SavageForum/index.php

Believe the short answer is yes. There are a couple of model 12 rifle offerings and I believe the twist range from 1:7 to 1:9.

Wondering if I know you. I shoot at Ansonia in CT.

Thanks -

Wm

Gunamonth,

Ah, thanks. I am reading emails from this fellow re his 6BR & I am confusing Lapua w Norma, clearly. His choice of ammo purchased- it is Norma 90g,he does not specify the bullet specifically). He has the 1/12 twist LRPV 6BR from Savage, and is concerned that the 90g will not stabilize & has yet to begin the process of learning 6BR reloading specifics firsthand, although he has reloaded before. He is not able to do any testing as such at the moment & is looking for advice in advance of shooting his rifle for the 1st time. I will pass along your opinion re bullet "may work". I have a 1/14 twist 6BR & can't advise him specifically from firsthand shooting of the 90g's- I have only used up to 65g's in mine...

William, Nope, never been to Ansonia. Can you give me some info? I have been shooting "locally" & would like to find a range nearby -- I am north of New Milford CT. I will check out forum-many thanks.

He has mentioned that he is getting 75 g V max's to use in place/after the 90g's...
He suspects that the 90g. bullet is too heavy & will use his cases to reload..
I passed on this info. While I do not know this young man, his unit is active in engaging targets in the mideast that shoot back, and is looking forward to enjoying his new 6br on leave on east coast. Thanks! www. 6mmbr = great resource. CT

Bill, I have two rifles chambered in 6mmBR Norma for Lapua brass with no turn necks. One a 28" PacNor, 8tw with a 273nk the other a 26" Hart, 12tw with a 273nk both will consistently shoot .2 & .3 five shot groups. These are varmint rifles so I've never shot any of the benchrest/long range bullets. Here's my pet load for out to 600yds. It's mild and the pressure should be under 50,000psi according to my Quick Load Program, which is great for barrel life in the prairie dog towns.

75gr Vmax - 29.0gr/H322 - CCI-BR4 - OAL @ 2.250 chronographs 3226fps out of the 28" and 3177fps out of my 26" barrel with a SD under 20 in both.,MY QUICK LOAD PROGRAM SHOWS MAX POWDER CHARGE TO BE 30.7gr/H322 FOR THE 6MMBR NORMA WITH THIS BULLET SEATED AT THIS DEPTH) Note: Both of my rifles group's started to open up above 29.5gr, please start low and work up.

I'm using Redding comp dies and a .268 TiNi bushing. Hope you find this helpful.

RJinTexas,

Thanks for the detailed & helpful info. Great to get so much info from you to make fully informed decisions on what to try / recommend for loads. I will pass on info...I shoot a 6BR as well,, so helpful to know. The 75g V-max is a great 6mm bullet - I use it in a 6AR w H 335. --when it hits a PD, why, they are just besides themselves in excitement! Do you prefer H322 over Varget? VERY helpful & appreciated.

Best regards.

Bill, H322 just shot the 75gr Vmax's better then Varget in my rifles. But I have no experience with the longer heavier competition bullet where the Varget would probable outperform it.

Please express my gratitude to the young military man for his service and I hope my load works for him.

If the 75 V-Max don't shot bugholes, try the 80gr Berger FB match. These have proven ultra-accurate for myself and many other shooters. Should stabilize just fine in a 1:12" twist barrel.

Gents, thanks. Helpful info. I will pass on greeting to the soldier -- he is clearly anticipating the fun of using the accurate 6br on PA groundhogs. I find the Bergers have to be seated very close to the lands versus others.

Another question while I am at it- Does seating INTO the lands always/sometimes/never necessarily increase pressures?

What is the best way of determining when the bullets is just touching rifling? I have been using a dummy with a series of small adjustments to lengthen the loaded round until it is "stuck" into the lands - then I use a .20 cal cleaning rod to push it out of the barrel & record length. Also a Hornady tool but never really sure when I am hitting the rifling with certainty.

Thanks.
