I recently bought this rifle for shooting long range and occasional coyotes.
A left handed bolt would have been prefered but Savage is stuck on the .308. The brass hadn't been fire formed yet.
I used the Kreiger barrel break in but it didn't seem to make any difference.
The trigger was set about as light as it would go.
All measurements were center to center. Shot about 50 rounds total.
Forester match dies
Hornady brass
CCI BR primers
SWFA 16X MOA-Quad scope
108 gr ELD Match bullets, 39.3 H4350
360 yards. 1.556" 3 rds
85 Sierra HPBT, 360 yards
360 yards, 2.286" center to center
108 Eld Match, 39.0 gr. H4350
200 yards .568" 3 rds.
108 ELD match, 39.5 gr IMR 4350
200 yards .605 3 rds
Barnes match burner, 39.0 H4350
200 yards 1.009"
Sierra 100 Spt,
200 yards .749" 4 rds.
Sierra 100 gr spt Win Ball 760
100 yards .125" 3 rds
This was the first group after clean/shoot 1, clean shoot 1, clean shoot 1.
I only used 3 rounds to start with, trying to get an idea of which what components to use. I didn't expect it to shoot this well without the usual experimenting with a lot of different components.
I tried a few ELD X bullets and they did almost as good as the 108's. There are some 103 ELD match bullets waiting to be tried.
I was hoping for a 1/2 MOA rifle and so far it looks more like a 1/4 rifle.
Bergers probably wouldn't do much better.
The adjustable comb and LOP are nice to have.
When the crops are out it will get some testing done between 800 and 1000 yards with 10-20 rounds at a time.
