Hi all today I picked up a Remington 700 mountain rifle in 280 Remington has anybody hand loaded and hunted with this cartridge and how does it perform any thoughts.thank you

Yes it’s a great cartridge. I’ve been loading 120gr barnes for mine. It definitely can handle a heavier bullet if you want that.

Lots of bullets in lots of weights.....hit the right spot and they all work. Out to 500 yards I have used 139 gr Hornady Spire Point the most. 168 gr Sierra Match King worked great on a 450 yd 8pt couple of years ago. Hit it in the chest facing me, dropped in its tracks so fast I did not even see it fall. Ballistic Tips work. Best powders I liked over 30 years with 280s is H4831 and RL19. Magnum primers with both. Enjoy, it's a great cartridge I have a lot of 500 to 600 yd kills, all 1 shot and down within 50 yds.

I've had a .280 in a 26" Ruger #1B for about 30 years now. Not sure how many whitetails I've taken with it and even a couple dozen groundhogs. Hornady 100-grain hollowpoints (discontinued now) for the 'hogs and 139 - 150-grain for deer. Loads are carefully loaded to safe real-life pressures (not the ones for semi-auto and pump rifles) and accuracy with selected loads is impressive. Anything a .270 can do the .280 can do...just a little bit better!
All kidding aside, .284" bullets seem to be available with a better choice than I can seem to find in .277".

I have a rem 700 mountain in 280 Remington. It's my go too hunting rifle for in the timber and in the mountains. I have killed several elk, mule deer, and whitetail with it. 160gr bonded soft point bullets get to 2795fps with Reloader 22 and hold 1-1.5 moa out to 500 for 3 shots for me.

It's a great do all cartridge.

This bull took one 160gr partition and fell down a mountain crashing into a blow down.

I've hunted with a Browning A Bolt for about 30 odd years, 140 Sierra Gamekings , RL 22, CCI 200 running around 2975 fps. 385 was my longest shot, with it, didn't go far as I recall. Most just fold in their tracks. Enjoy!
I've killed a truck load with mine.

Don't be afraid of the newer powders either.
I'm running a Ruger 77 MKII with the factory 22" barrel.
150gr Ballistic Tips over Alliant PP4000MR.

Had two gone now both Custom jobs. Shot 140 gr. Bullets worked well, never thought they out did a .270.
Did a a side by side at 200 and 300 yards .270 and .280 . At 200 just about neck and neck. At 300 .280 about 2" lower. .270 just a flatter shooter.
.280 put a couple Elk down.

Very nice caliber .

Been loading and shooting one since 1980 when I picked up a new BDL custom deluxe when they changed the name to 7mm Express Remington. I'm with Dave on this one. My go to powder always has been H4831 and second is Reloder 19. Shot 3 caribou in Quebec with some 160 Speer Grand Slams and they performed flawlessly. Your going to like this caliber as it is very versatile.

.280 Rem or as it was briefly called a 7 MM Express is a great cartridge. H4831 with 140 grr Sierra GK’s or Nosler BT’s or CT Bullets . I used one for years with great success . Later went to .280 AI adding 3.0 more grains of powder but the straight 280 is great as it.

Funny I just found some H-4831 today I’ll try that out . What primer did you use ?thanks

Treat like the kid brother to the 7RM in terms of bullet selection, powder's to consider etc....Another way to think about it is to think of it as a necked down 30-06.

Plenty of people manage to get 7RM performance from it's AI counter part.

Since it is built on a long action depending on the specific action you can do all the things you would do to a wildcat like seating out the bullet to gain some extra case capacity, throating the chamber to allow for higher pressure with out over pressure, blowing out the case taper like P.O. Ackley did and Gibb's did etc....

You can also just run it as it is.

Unlike long ago you can actual buy factory loaded 280AI ammo.

I do not do any of that myself to date. If I wanted a 7RM I would just build or buy a 7RM but people like to have choices.

So anything you would hunt with a 30-06Sprg., 270 Win, 284 Win, 7RM you can also hunt with a 280Rem.

I will say this if hunting and dropping game with utmost reliability is your thing stick with bonded core bullets,Nosler Partitions, Swift A Frames, Speer Grand Slams, Barnes Monolithic TSX etc.....I would avoid almost every popular and trendy bullet from Hornady even their interlock but especially their ELDX and avoid Berger's bullets like the plague for hunting on anything that is not a varmint. The current trend of using fragile high BC bullets for hunting is disastrous and stupid. Those bullets are however fantastic for target shooting and varmint hunting! Cup and core bullets are fine for varmints but in this day and age have no place in ethical hunting. It was one thing when we had no choice or we where ignorant of science.

For deer and larger you want a bullet that can penetrate bone and retain 90%+ of it's weight and expand to no less than 2X it's bore diameter reliably and dump it's energy into the organs. If you do those things first it does not matter if the bullet exits the animal or not. We used to frown on that but with controlled expansion bullets like the Partition, the A Frame and Monolithic bullets like Barnes it no longer matter's. It is a plus in some sense because the exit wound is normally large and leaves a great blood trail.

You can find easily ammo loaded with 120gr. to 180gr, with 140gr., 150gr and 160gr. being the most common loading in commercial ammo. 140gr. 168gr. and 175gr. are super popular with hand loaders!

A 2 or 3 chamber muzzle break are all great for hunting use to allow you to stay on target to spot impact and get off a super fast follow up shot. A solid designed 3 chamber break reduces recoil on a 280Rem to about that of a 243Win. While still vicious on hearing not a bad as old school radial muzzle device with 20-30 holes. Just something to consider.

Good Luck! Hope you put plenty of meat in the Freezer when the time is right. I saw 40 deer tonight on my walk!
