New Project

I just picked up a Savage Model 10 serial number starting with G and is a GPS model 300WSM. It is the 4.27 action spaced bolts and the action seems to be round but the bolt handle is flat? Are these center feed or staggered? I am told this is the large shank barrel which makes it harder to find the barrels for without just out right ordering one and getting is cut I am finding out. Any way what caliber do you guys think? I have a bunch of SMK 175 HPBT for 308 left over and Foster dies. So 308 is prob a better option but I am reading that the 6.5x47 Lapua and 300 WSM are good cartridges as well for long distance shooting and accuracy.

What twist rates are best for the 6.5x47 Lapua and the 300 WSM? What bullet weights? Powder?

I am looking at the B&C Medalist Stock from Stockys for a stock or the XLR chassis

4.27" is a staggerfeed. Pre-fit barrels are not that hard to find. Jim Briggs at Northland Shooting Supplies usually has what you need. The Barrel Man is another source. Pac-Nor makes pre-fits among others. The bolt handles were flat on top then were slowly switched to rounded, one works as good as the other. Caliber ? dies are not that expensive, don't let that sway you in your decision. I bought a .308 30" CBI barrel from Jim for 1000 yard fclass and it will shoot winning scores, throat is a little short but a uni-throater will take care of that if I have a mind too. Whatever cartridge you go with would depend on what it's duty would be. I like the B&C Medalist stocks, I have CDI bottom metal in mine. I like them better then my McMillan A2.

Thanks for the info!! I am really leaning to the Medalist. I wish the made the fully adjustable one for the 4.27" spacing :-/. Anyways I have been talking to rock creek this am and I have had their barrels in the past. I will look up these other guys too. I meant that the large shank is just not as readily available like the small shank ones that can be found at many places ready to buy.

I like 308 it is versatile but the others are fun to shoot they say. Only thing about off the shelf barrels is its hard to find that 1:11.25' twist rate for the 308 its usually 1:10 or 1:12 and if i had to pick between those i would rather it be the 1:10 for a 175gr bullet.

If your going to order a new barrel get a 1/10 twist. It'll shoot anything except the real heavy bullets like 215's

So the guy at Rock Creek said that they have some guys that will chamber and thread the barre on their own time and including the cost of the barrel it would be $400 plus shipping for a heavy varmint contour 1:11.25 twist 308 barrel with their 5R single point cut rifling. Good deal or go with the Shilen or Criterion from Northlands?

Tough choice. My Rock Creek shoots well, and I had a Shilen that was a hammer.

I would probably choose on availability, twist, or contour. If you call Northland, they will probably only have Bull barrels in Large shank. If you want something lighter, you might have to wait.

Savage bull is heavier than HV.
