new project pre 64 model 70 264 win mag

I have a new project for my brother. Our dad purchased a model 70 264 win mag in 1961 and we have decided to re-stock and just do a trigger job on it and see what we can accomplish. Its a westerner with 26 inch barrel. I have picked up redding dies nosler brass and 130 gr accubonds to start this project. I also have 140 gr sierra gamekings and 140 gr partitions on hand. I have retumbo, magpro imr 4831 imr 4350 available. any suggestions for a place to to start? I have heard some good reports with magpro and retumbo. Any help would be appreciated..... I bet this gun has had less than 100 rounds through it in its lifetime. I have cleaned it properly and just want to get started Thanks in advance for your help................ Huntrrr

I have owned and shot 264 Winchester Mag's since 1962 outside of have a very limited barrel life it is one of the best killing machine on deer. The very best power I have found is H4831 with 120gr -140gr bullets. One of my favorites is 65.0gr H4831 and a 120gr Nosler Ballistic tip. MV 3350 and will shoot 1/2" groups a 100yards and 4" group at 600 yards. These guns have very low recoil for the amount of horsepower they produce. I have a few 7mm Remington Mags and in my opinion the 264 shoot so much better than the 7mm Mag groups are 1/2 the size of the 7mm. Be sure not to shoot on a day that tempture is to hot as you could damage your barrel if it gets too hot. I have one model 700 Remington that I have replaced the barrel 7 times over the last 40 years. The twist I use is 1 in 8 or 1 in 9 depending on who's barrel I am using. You will love it!!!

A 58 grain load of H-4350 should help you reach 2950fps with a 140 grainer. That's quite enough and will maintain that barrel humming for another 50 years.

Try the Retumbo first. I am shooting the 130 Accubond 10 thousands off the lands, with 66.5 grs Retumbo, WW cases or WW cases made from 7mm Rem mag cases, (just run them through the FL 264 Win die and you have 264 Win cases), CCI 250 primer. I have a Shilen 27 3/4" barrel and I am averaging 3350 fps and 1/2 MOA accuracy. Rifle is a Rem 700, Shilen barrel in a Hogue full bed stock. I have used it some the past two deer seasons to take 5 deer from 80 to 250 yards. BANG FLOP. The first buck I shot was hot trailing a doe in a GREEN soybean field just after sun up. He stopped, latter lazed, at 250 yards out for just a moment too long and I placed the cross hair of the Meopta 3-12X56 in the center of his front shoulder and squeezed the trigger. BOOM POP. Say that as fast as you can and that is how it sounded. Man that bullet got there fast. When the rifle came back on target from the recoil the field was empty. Then I ask myself, "Just exactly were was the buck standing when I shot him"? ??? I like to never found him in those green soybeans. I almost stepped on him after walking with in feet of him for about an hour. They have all died about that quick, on the ground before the gun comes down out of it's mild recoil. Good luck and good shooting.
