About a gazillion years ago I bought my first "brand spanking new" rifle. A sako Vixen in 222 mag with the semi heavy barrel.
IMR4895 was in local shops and was reported as a good powder so that was what I used.
No complaints but in this day of superior powders and seemingly mandatory chronographs for lots.......I have to wonder whom has tried what with what results in this fine old round.
X-terminator, H322, H335, TAC.....and some old standys like 4198 still get reports of good results.
It seemed to me and a few others to be one of the rounds that it was just difficult to load a "bad' combination but till the new to me Steyr SL in 222mag arrives and I figure out if Im going to bother with a chrony (too much time on my hands lol) I thought I would stick a post out here and see if a few might have ran the powder gauntlet a bit with this round and had some results.
Holding about a grain more than the 223, lots of load data is "close" but thought Id ask for some personal experiences with "new and improved" powders. Ramshot dont list it that I can find and sure some others dont either. Not one they have requests for a lot.
Yep.....I'm betting 4895 still will do the same job, even 4064 at a bit less velocities that Ill use up in some loads but, as always, one has to wonder if there isn't something new that gives this old warrior new life........a bit.
God Bless for any experiences you can share.
Old guns, old rounds.......sometimes something is there that gets and keeps my attention.
