New muzzle brake on rifle...1000 yard VIDEO range report

I recently sent my Surgeon Scalpel in .243 back to Surgeon to have a Badger FTE muzzle brake installed. Got a chance between rain storms to get to the range and do some shooting.

As you can hear in the video...the wind was blowing pretty good. But that just adds to the fun of shooting at long range.

Here is the video link (youtube) of some shots at 1000 yards: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vxo71WUP3l0

Turn up the volume and go full screen and you can hear and see the hits.

Load info for those who care:

107 SMK's
Lapua brass
Wolf LR primers
40.1 grains of H4350

Take care,Stan

PS...check out my other videos.

Loved the video and the close up during the actual firing. That is one sweet looking rifle and it appears that the brake is really doing a great job. Keep it up.

Stan,

Great video. Preston at Surgeon will be happy to see one of his rifles shoot like that. Love the frame in frame, and yes I could hear the shots on steel.

Enjoyed that. Spent time rooting for you to hold more at 1 o'clock and get those 7 o'clock hits on. Doesn't matter you said they were all hits. It was fun to cheer you on.

Stan, great video and really like your range also like your other videos keep them comming. PS nice camera work thanks Mark

I am wondering what changes adding the brake caused to the rifle, did POI change if so how much?? did you have to develop a different load? the other thing is how about noise, in a coyote calling situation would using this gun with the brake and no hearing protection be do able or just flat out not.

great videos, I can only imagine what the ones must be like that aren't released to the public.

The POI was about and inch high and right. I have done nothing to my load...if a muzzle brake is properly installed it really should have little effect on accuracy, etc.

I wear electronic muffs when I am coyote hunting. Even when I am shooting a non-braked rifle. I have lost about half my hearing in my right ear do to years of shooting/hunting with no hearing protection. So now I am careful.

Take care,Stan

PS...yep...if only my camcorder could talk!!

hey why don't you have amber review the t3 in 243 with the shorter barrel and muzzle brake installed, detail the modifications how it shoots etc. more eye candy would be nice.

I no longer own the short barreled Tikka. The one you see in the video is my friend who is featured in the video. He liked my Tikka .243 so much he bought the blued model and set it up like mine.

Take care,Stan

PS...here is a picture of my old one:

what kind of extractor does that surgeon rifle use?? perhaps you should do a review of the rifle and how it shoots, as in group size etc. and other details.

The short action Surgeon actions use standard Remington extractor. The Large actions use M16 style.

Below are some five shot groups I shot with this rifle at 100 and 300 yards while doing load development. It shoots as well as my last Bat action bench rest rifle (6XC).

When I do my part I can shoot 4-6" groups at 1000 yards with it.

Take care,Stan

dude that is awesome, whose barrel is on it?? I am planning on doing up a 243 ai on a BAT VRpicitanny action. BAT and surgeon are the only ones that I can find that have the integral lug and picitanny machined into the action, but for some reason surgeon used that standard style extractor. wonder why they only offer that with the short actions??

One thing to note on the BAT. The recoil lug is over sized (a good thing) but....it is NOT standard Remington specs. The lug is large towards the REAR of the action!?!? Why the did/do this is beyond me. It should have been extended forward.
For most builds this is no big deal...but if you are using a chassis system (AICS,etc.) then you have to mill out the recoil lug area....a permanent alteration to the chassis.
I learned this the hard way on my current 6XC build so I returned the BAT action and went with a Surgeon 591 action.

The reason Surgeon uses standard extractors on their short actions is so that you can find off the shelf parts. Remember Surgeon's target market is tactical. So police SWAT, military, etc. So the armorer probably has a few extractors on hand.

The barrel is a 1:8 twist Krieger.

Take care,Stan

PS...pics of my 6XC build...note the first pics with the BAT action...then the Surgeon action.

I am using a mcmillan stock and they are inletting it for the action, man I wish you still had that action, because that is exactly the one I want.
