New Member

Hey, I'm a new member from central MA.
I shot a little on paper years ago with a Remington Varmint SP. in 25-06
with a Redfield 3200 12X scope.
I compete in NRA Precision pistol both indoor and a little outdoor.
My club has a nice 300yard range and the plans are in motion to bring in machines to make it better.
So now im thinking that I would like to buy a rifle to shoot in the clubs Monday AM
Geezer informal bench rest group.
I reload currently for Pistol and an AR 223 and my 7-08 deer rifle.
I am kind of interested in the Savage model 12 either their BR of LRPV in 6mm Norma BR.
There are none available at present but I figured I would ask people who know more about accurate rifles than I if this is
a good way to get my feet wet or is there a better direction to go.
I am soon to be 70 years old and retired so I time to spend at the range.
I'm not looking to have a custom rifle built and savage seems to fit my budget.
Thanks in advance for any advise.

Welcome. Take it from me, young fella, as soon as that Savage starts shooting well enough, you will be looking to do better. It's what we do. I thought that I could do well enough with a good, but older "target " gun ( Omark for the antipodeans). Within a year, I had something better - by the next year - full custom job. Now it's 4. 223, 308, 6BR and before Xmas the 6SLR will be done. The old gun has a new Criterion barrel and is a varminter in 6BRX, and the 308 is getting a new barrel.

aaah, said the wise man...'tis a fine line between "pastime" and "mental illness"

Welcome aboard
Depending on how comfortable you feel assembling a rifle you may be better off buying a savage action and prefit barrel and assembling what you want. If you are shooting targets from the bench even informally you will want to upgrade the factory barrel pretty quickly, when you buy a rifle then upgrade it you are basically paying twice, check northland shooters supply for most things you will need. A savage action with a prefit barrel will be a big step up accuracy wise at a lower cost than a full custom.

Wellcome Sir....yep to everything thats been said in todays posts...you
are in for a wild ride..so hang on and enjoy it.
Perhaps even become a contributing member here...we would love to have ya.

Welcome to the forum Gary glad to meet you

I also shoot 300 yards with our clubs geezer class of members. The Savage would be a good choice for starters, they shoot well right out of the box. I might make a suggestion for starters, given the current state of reloading components, why not start with a .223? They are plenty accurate and at 300 yards quite sufficient And you are already loading for this caliber. This will get you up and shooting quickly and you can always swap in 6br barrel and bolt face later.

my gun of choice for our 300 yard shoots is built on a Remington 700 action and chambered in 6X45.

BUY USED! You'll get way more rifle for your $. Watch forum classifieds or even put a "want to buy" ad up with your budget and you might get a great deal on a semi-custom for the price of a (gasp) new Savage which you'd soon want to throw money at anyway!
Good luck!

I will place a WTB add after my 30 day wait to post period is up.
I wanted to stay within 3K for rifle and optic.
but.........plans change
I did check out Shooter Corner
My issue there is lack of knowledge as to actions and barrels.
6MM PPC is the most common caliber for sale and I know it has been king at 100 yards.
If it still is and is it still stable at 300, I don't know.
Seems it should be is 223 can be with correct twist and bullets..
I sure have a lot to lern.
