New member with a question

Greetings all. I'm not an avid forum poster so I will apologize up front if I just pop in with a question once in awhile. Mostly, I just read various forums when time allows. I've been an Eastern woodchuck hunter for many years and am now growing old (65). I still carry my Rem. 788 in .223 (glass-bedded it so it typically will shoot 1/2 - 3/4" at 100yds). I got a set of reloading dies for 6mmPPC and was thinking about getting a medium weight rifle in this cal. to switch-off from the .223. I've been thinking about buying a Savage with the Accustock and trigger and having Shilen put a bbl on it. What caliber Savage would have the correct bolt face for that project? Would Savage chamber a special order for 6mmPPC? Just curious for some opinions if you don't mind a casual visitor. TKS, John N.

I believe you would want a rifle with a .308 bolt face.

I`m not positive, but someone will be along shortly to confirm or correct me, and you will have a positive answer to your question.

Hey John! I did a little research and the base diameter for a 6ppc is .441 and rim diameter is .445. With that being said, the base diameter for a .243 win is .471 and the rim diameter is .473, the difference is roughly .030 inches. I could be wrong but, I think a .243 bolt face would probably work.

Savage doesn't make a bolt face to fit the PPC head size. The extractor on a 0.473 (BR/.308 size) bolt face might pull a PPC case -- someone with a Savage action could check. If you're planning to use an ejector, the PPC will probably cause more problems on the BR boltface than if a single-shot without ejector is used.

At any rate, for 'chuck shooting you might want to go with a 6BR instead of a 6PPC. The cases for 6PPC are usually formed from .220 Russian brass, which is a bit of a nuisance compared to load-and-shoot 6BR. Any accuracy difference between the 6PPC and 6BR is moot for varmint hunting inside 300yd, and beyond 300yd the 6BR (with 80-108gr bullets and appropriate barrel twist) is a better choice, anyhow.

You can buy a Savage in 6BR and replace the barrel when/if you like.

Not to ruffle any feathers here but, I've seen 6ppc built on rem 700 actions and to the best of my knowledge remington never chambered a 220 russian or 6ppc from the factory. Now I'm not sure that there wasn't any bolt face reconfigurations that happened in these builds but, I've seen 6ppc on rem 700 platform!

WOW, you guys are fast. I was just leaving the office and thought I'd check in on the Forum and BINGO. Really appreciate the info. This certainly is just what I needed to know. Things have sure gotten complex in the last 50 years :-) Thanks again. John N

The standard Rem extractor on a 0.473 bolt face won't reliably pull a PPC case, so the usual fixes to set up a Rem 700 for PPC are to bush the 0.473 bolt face and install a Sako extractor, or open up a 0.378 (.222 size) bolt face to fit a PPC and install a Sako extractor. The Sako extractor will pull a PPC case off a 0.473 bolt face -- I've tried it with my Stiller PredatorV.

If you're set on having a 6PPC, you might look for a used BR rifle or a Sako varmint rifle orginally chambered for 6PPC. Those Sakos would really shoot. But before you go the PPC route, read up on brass prep:

A 6BR or 22BR will probably do everything you want, with considerably less hassle.

johnnu: My first 6ppc (1998) was built on a Remington 700 short action, originally factory chambered to 6mm Remington/ standard 308 bolt face. My gunsmith sleeved the bolt, to take it from .478" to the ppc dia. of .441". Also converted to a Sako extractor. Eleven years later, it's still going strong, no problems. Ditto to the suggestion of considering the 6BR, with the standard 308 bolt face. One of my switch barrel's, chambered in 6BR, now has a 308 barrel fitted, and the options are many if wanting yet another cartridge for that same receiver. The added expense of another fitted bolt is not required: one receiver/bolt= many different cartridges.

Thanks again everyone....you all are great and I appreciate all the info. I have a sneaky feeling that I'll be sticking with my old 788 :-) John N.

shilene would be able to tell you for sure. i would think a .223 bolt head could be opened up to handle a 6ppc. another option would be to buy a czusa action with the apropriate bolt. if i were you i would also give mcgowen precision a call. i'm pretty sure the started offering pre-fit barrels for savage. jst buy you a barrel nut wrench and a set of headspace gauges and you can do the rebarrel job yourself. smithing on savage barrel is usually aslo a little cheaper if you don't feel confident enough. savageshooters.com is a good place to visit if your set on building on a savage action.

John,
Most Remington built to 6PPC started as a 223 bolt face opened to PPC and a sako extractor. Sharpshooter supply has ppc boltfaces. I would look at the 6BR in a Savage you like, then you can the ppc stuff.
