New Member -- Seeks Reloading Guidance

Hi everyone!

I am a new member to the forum and i am looking for help and guidance on reloading. Specifically .338 lapua, 300 win mag, .308/7.62x51 calipers

This is what I have for shooting rifles.
Ruger RPR in .338 lapua magnum
Franchi momentum elite in .300 win magnum
AR-10 in .308 win/7.62x51 (multi caliper rifle)

I have geared up for reloading with rcbs summit single stage loading press, rcbs charge lite powder measure machine, Wilson case length trimmer, case length/size gages, rcbs brass master station. along with calipers micrometers and other such things such as trays and case polisher and such.
I am a machinist by trade and i am used to measurments, weights, volumes etc.

I know this is a very vast subject and will have multiple routes for information so please feel free to ask and i will fill in the blanks on my road to good reloading skills.

Here are my first hurtles.
Smokeless powder and its wide range of possibilities or (lack of supply for the desired powder to reload said caliper!!)
I am concentrating on .338 Lapua right now and i am having difficulty finding a consistent smokeless powder to keep on my bench to reload. I have two Powders (1st is accurate brand magpro powder and 2nd is Ramshot LRT powder) I follow the reloading recommendations for both of these powders and have had consistent results with them. I document all of my Loading each time and also the results from my shooting times including chronograph and groupings. I also watch for any problems with the gun or Brass while shooting and adjust my loads if there seams to be an issue! My problem is the supply and having to possibly change and start over again with all new reloading data and documentation of my loads and shooting results. Hodgon lets me buy once a month from there supply and most all of the powders for this Magnum load are getting really hard to get at a reasonable Rate and price if I go to other sources to try and find. I want to stick with one or two powders only but I am down to about 30-50 rounds on each powder I have left.

If I have to change my base for reloading it gets very difficult to choose a powder for this caliper. all of the main stream powders are out of stock and going to off brand powders that it seams like alot of shooters have to resort to the data for reloading is all over the place or not real clear or trusting for going to. some of the data does not go with the preferred bullets to shoot or the data is not to be found even.

Shooting this .338 Lapua caliper is a joy to shoot for me but i do not want to do damage to my gun or myself with what i am having to resort to with changing powders and loading data, bullets, etc. this is not a very economical round in the first place i know and at around 8 bucks a round through the store is not pleasant on the wallet. this is why i went to reloading and i enjoy it.

Anyone's input is thankful and i am open minded so don't be afraid to put things on here that you think might boil some anger issues. This is why I joined the forum for YOUR input and YOUR knowledge and experience with all of this crap that is going on.

Thankyou!

Welcome! Good background info...
Can't help w 338 Lapua.
The search function on this site is incredibly useful for prior posts, info, knowledge base, problems and solutions. And opinions :)

Welcome Phil! I almost bought one of those 338 Lapua Mag boomers! My shoulder and wallet said NO!
Good luck with it! There are some tougher guys here that shoot it. You’ll probably hear from them.
Merry Christmas!

We all are struggling with component shortages.
For what i shoot, i first determined what powders would work. Then watched the various sites for when one of the powders were available. Once i got some of one, i simply focused on acquiring more of it.

Thanks Josh!

FYI if you are worried about the recoil this thing is 25LBS rigged out so it absorbs a lot of the dreaded recoil!! I was pleasantly surprised and love shooting it because of this. my son has a savage 110 and his does give a good kick though!

Sounds like you are already reloading some. The introduction part of any quality
reloading guide has a wealth of knowledge and they have written and edited it so much
the information is astounding. Always great to refer back to.
