New manufacture 80gr SMKs pointed?

There's a guy over on SnipersHide that said he recently got a box of 80gr SMKs from Midway and they were pointed out of the box, a change from 'old' 80gr SMKs.

He said he contacted Sierra and the rep told him that 90s are now pointed, but that he had no info that 80s were pointed.

Anybody here notice a similar change?

Sure did! My last box of 500 80 SMK's are pointed from the factory. In the past I have pointed them via the Whidden. My X count went up considerably when I started pointing them. I shot a match with the factory pointed ones and my X count was lower. ???????? The hollow point hole in the factory ones is almost totally closed. Not so with the ones I point. I think there is maybe some lost BC due to this. They are not supposed to be closed too much. I'll try them again and see what happens. Problem is is that I guess the non pointed ones are no longer available . Just my 10 cents.

Try trimming them a hair and compare. Let us hear back how it goes if you do.

Looks at your points. If they are like my 115 dtacs some are more open and some are needle pointed. My groups varied 12" center to center vertically at 1k from each group. I called David Tubbs Company about this and they did not care. Bullets have to be length sorted before pointing and Sierra is not doing so.

You are right!! Very inconsistent . No wonder my X count went to hell!! Going back to the others. Do you know if we can still get them unpointed? Is there a distinction in the product number between the two? I know, lots of questions but you seem to be better connected than I. Thanks, Snuggie.

Nope, not connected at all, I shoot at PA as my "home" range also. Length sort them from base to tip and shoot them in groups of .005 and you will be fine. I sort all my 90's base to tip prior to pointing then I can shoot them all together after pointing.
