New Lot of Varget is slower

Not posting to start an argument, just for info in case you have run into the same problem. I have a Rem 700 that shot very well in our club 300 yard F Class. All of a sudden it's accuracy went in the dumpster. I remember reading that the new lots of Varget were slower but nobody ever said how much. So I did a small test (10 ea). I have two lots. One is of the 5,000 series (old) and the other is 7,000 series (new). Loaded 24.5 grains of Varget and a 69 Serria HPBT-M in each test group and off to the range. The new lot (7000) series was 115 f.p.s. slower than the older lot (5000). Good thing is, that by bumping the load up to 24.5 (1.5 gr) I have regained the accuracy in that Rem 700.

That is extreme , what was your es -sd difference between the two . thanks for the post . dave

Tom, unless I didn't read your post correctly, you mean you kicked your 7000 Varget up from 24.5 grains to 26 grains.

Another option is to buy more Varget, mix it all together in a big container and make a “new lot”. Buy a couple of years supply and move on to other projects.

Actually I bumped it up from 23 to 24.5 because we only shoot 300 on our range. For my other F Class I shoot 80 gr. berger VLD and haven't tried the new lot yet with that. I hope I find a node closer than 1.5 grains higher because I already load those to 24.5. In any event I have 16 lbs of the new lot #, so I will have to find a solution.

No, I was loading at 23 and moved to 24.5, hope that clears it up. I usually don't bother with checking FPS. I only test by grains of powder. You know, start at 23 then up in .5 grains until I find a node.

Thought about that, but I will first try and find a load with this lot for all my F Class .223's. I never shoot beyond 600 any more. My old shoulder won't take the 30's anymore.

Afraid I didn't save that info from the Cronograph. Was only interested in FPS between the two. I just used the averages shown on the screen per Lot #. Sorry
