New here

Hello guys, I am new here. This may not be the place for this but just thought I would drop in and say hello. I have been doing some reading.

I have many guns but recently just purchased a DPMS Panther LR243 and my search for good ammo to use in my 1:10 twist 20" barrel lead me here.

Im still getting used to the site and will TRY to find my answers first before asking a question has been asked many many times thought I cant promise that will always be the case ;D

Welcome to the site, you will enjoy it.

Happy shooting and may all your groups be one hole!

Well thanks. I am not sure what to expect accuracy wise with the AR platform that im getting. Everything I read is between .5 and 1.0 moa....so we will see.

Welcome to the site, good luck with your new rifle this site will hook you

Yes....I am seeing that. I have been reading for a few days. There is so much to read. Loads of great info.

As the others have said, welcome. I should point out that this is a place where factory ammunition is almost never a topic of discussion, since most, if not all of those that frequent this site load their own. On the other hand, if you decide to do that, I am sure that you will find plenty to read, keeping in mind that loading for a semiautomatic has different requirements from a bolt action target rifle, many things are the same, but some are different.

Thanks for the welcome guys.

Good deal GLO ;D ;D

I do plan on setting myself up to reload the .243 here in the near future.

Right now I have a Dillon 650 but its set up for .45Colt and .38spl.

I plan to buy a single stage press and start trying to work with the .243.

then you are in the right place....Where would you like to start?

Well unfortunately it will be a while before I can get everything together to load .243.

Right now I will be forced to by a few boxes of factory ammo. :'(

Any recommendations on some factory ammo for the 1:10 twist 20"?

Please dont damn me too much for asking about factory ammo.

Damn, damn, damn, damn..... ;D
Seriously, some time ago I was given several brands of ammo to test in my .220 Swift. The Hornady was the straightest, and grouped a little better than the rest, although it all shot pretty well out of my single shot Savage 112.

Well damn ;D

I guess I will just have to get myself set up for .243 soon then.

I am really not sure what all it takes to reload for accuracy in a rifle.

Like I said, right now I use my Dillon 650 for .45colt and .38spl for cowboy loads. Nothing to that stuff.

I plan to buy a single press. Can anyone sort of lay out what I need or should get to load for .243?

Sorry for the noob question.

There's gonna be about a gazillion answers to that. RCBS rockchucker press, correct shell-holder, A set of micrometers- cheap ones for now maybe, Champher tool, (primers ,powder, bullets, specified by the elders on this site) ;D excludes me. and a set of good dies. that will get you started, Add to it as you need to....What have I forgoten fellas? You can find lots of load data right here.

Yea, we were all born knowing this stuff. ;)
I am going to tell you something that most of the guys that follow will scoff at, and you may resist mightily. You can just as easily start out right, and set yourself up to load at the range, and at home. The vast majority of shooters load at home. Good for them. If you have a lot of time and like taking a long time and putting in a lot of miles to work up loads, then it is still not the may to go.(Oh I can hear the keyboards clicking.)
You will still need a press, and a powder measure, dies and some way to weigh powder. Other than not favoring a heavy press to lug to the range, and having to use a wind box for your scale, the rest of the equipment is the same. (I can hear the crackling of the flames as I write this.) I should mention one thing, the most accurate shooters in the world (at 1-200 yd.) load at the range, and they don't do it because they have a lot of extra time between matches. They do it because it is the only way that they can be competitive. Now someone will pop up and tell you that big matches have been won preloaded. They have, but not many, and there is a reason for that. If the weather that the loads were worked up for does not show up on match day, good freakin' luck. Anyway, that is way too much for you to mull over in one shot. Let's let the dust settle for a while.

I do see your point. Im sure its a plus to be right there at the range and can load what is accurate with the conditions you are shooting in.

I like the RockChucker and may get that. I have a Dillon Digi Scale but I guess I will need to get something to throw the powder.

I know people like to have them touching the lands and grooves but how do you figure that out?

Maybe my questions would be more suited for the loading forum here but thought I would ask since we started talking about it.

Boyd, thanks for the scale box idea, seriously! Sometimes I take prepped , primed brass to the range along with my Wilson hand seater, but almost always am trying to block the wind from effecting my scale with an open gun case etc.

I have been shooting, reloading and hunting for 50 years. In general (there are always exceptions), short range benchresters load at the range. Long range F Classers and Palma shooters load at home. The vast majority of hunters shoot factory and could care less about reloading.

My first press was an RCBS JR. bought in 1965. My second press was an RCBS RockChucker bought in 1985. Of the two the Jr would be the better range press but I don`t think it is made anymore. Been replaced by an aluminum job called the Partner I believe. My main press now is the original RCBS manual progressive 4x4, a modified RockChucker with 4 stations.

RCBS offers a reloading package based on the RockChucker that includes scale, powder measure, various accessories. All you have to buy extra are the dies and shellholder.

How is Pat Garrett doing these days?

If you buy good dies and a conversion kit you can reload pretty nice and accurate ammo on your dillion 650. Do your case prep first. Use quality bullets. select a powder that meters well. I get .5"... 5 shot groups out of my AR-15 with all the ammo loaded on my dillion. with an AR-10 you will probably Full legenth size anyway.

I don't get much better results from my single stage press.

I may think about doing that. It throws pretty accurate loads with lots of different powders I have tried so far.

OH yeah.....Pat is dead....but a legend lives forever. lol
