New guy

Hello to everyone . I am the new guy here. Have been thinking about building a long distance gun for sometime. There sure is A LOT to consider on a build.. I spend my time time between Georgia and Idaho.Lots of long distance place to shoot here in Idaho. The only thing I have decided is on the 300 winchester caliber. I am sure I will get a lot of info from ya'll. Can't wait to buy a action. Thanks for the sight. Reeve

Hey, welcome! I bought a 300 Win mag when I was just starting. It was fun but the barrel life sucks and it devours powder. Listen to Presidential candidate Snert ,RMulhern, and the others. They know of what they speak. Good luck!

Ok thanks guys I will listen to the experts. Here is the deal. I don't think I ever will shoot in a match. I like building REALLY cool guns. I don't take them to shooting ranges because I don't want people to think I am showing off. I like to impress myself. The way it will be used is load up the truck with pop up cover and all the gear and go out in the middle of nowhere and set up and spend the day shooting. It's not that i am unsociable just don't like people. JUST kidding. I would like some day to be able to hit something 2000 yards away. I think gun are a piece of art that I can play with. So please tell me what ya'll think.

All I know is it's Monday!

When's Christmas??:po_O

During my first years in Wyoming I bounced around several different calibers for elk. Then...I bought a 300 win mag and angel dust came to rest on me!!

I'm a little like you. I'm also frugal. When I want to shoot a gun a lot, I look at barrel life. I usually shoot 50-100 rounds when I go to the range. Look at the calibers that at least offer 2500 to 5000 rounds before they go south. You could cook that 300 Win mag your first summer of shooting. Figure a new barrel costs $500-700 if you're using a smith. Savage is a different game.

300 win mag. Awesome round. Fun to shoot. Nice big powder column. Bad for barrels. I smoked two barrels in two summers. First barrel chambered sammi. Second barrel chambered mk 248 mod 1. 1280 rds on first one with 210 bergers at 3040fps. 1120 rds on second one runnin 230 hybrids goin 2925. As much fun as I had with that rifle I will say go with 300 win mag. Get out your checkbook though.
