New guy w/build?

Hey guys, I'm fairly new to this competition stuff but it definitely has gotten into my blood and I want to build a rifle. I have a Weatherby vanguard in .300wby and want to know if the action is good enough to build on? If so is it possible to convert from a magnum down to a standard boltface, because I'm contemplating a 6.5x55 improved. Or do I keep the magnum and build a target cannon? I want to use the rifle for some 300 to 600yd work and some 1000yd stuff. You guys are the experts here, so help me out with any suggestions you might have as far caliber choice and so on. Thanks

You would have to bush your bolt down to size and it's a little pricey, you might be better off to keep the Vanguard and build your 6.5 from another action.
