New Guy Saying Hi

Just wanted to say Hi. I mainly joined JUST because of this small cal forum. I'm mainly a plinker/shoot paper at heart, with some hunting thrown in at times. My rifles ( in .22 ) at present- Rugar M77/22 Hornet worked over by Randy at Conneticut Chambering. Started life as a 20" lite barrel setup with an oversize factory chamber. Now has 24" K Hornet SS barrel, trigger /bolt worked over, 2X10X38 Weaver, likes the Sierra #1210 45gr bullet. This is my walk around shooter. #2 is a Rugar VT .223, wearing a Mueller 3X10X42 Tac II. As its still fairly new, I'm still playing with it. Have got a selection of 40gr BT's to 50gr V Max's for it. Had almost an 8lb jug of WW748 given to me by my brother, along with having some Benchmark to play with. I'll be here to listen, and LEARN. Al

I can already tell you are gonna be havin fun with the hornet,I had one and sold it because it would'nt shoot. I should of done what you did. Welcome and remember keep coming back. Those little rugers are pretty,gotta love them.

That Winchester #748 will work super in your 223 with almost any weight bullet of course the weight that will shoot best will depend on the twist in your rifle.

Welcome aboard. When I was a University student in the 1960s, bought my first "real" rifle with proceeds from a summer job. It was a Savage 340 in .22 Hornet. Got a Weaver K6 scope in a Toronto pawn shop for $10. Ghastly oversized chamber but shot a lot of chucks with it. Bought my first reloading setup for it - RCBS Jr. press and Lyman dies. Learned a lot with that cartridge. Cheap to reload for a kid with not too much money.

After a year or so took it to a country gunsmith name of Ellwood Epps who set the barrel back and rechambered for the K-Hornet. Finally a tight chamber. My records from 1966 show 45 gr Hornadys over a charge of Hercules 2400 (now Alliant) going into 3 shot groups under an inch at 100 yds. This was before cheap chronographs became available so could only guess at the velocity. Probably around 2700 fps.

The next few years proceeded to devastate the g`hog population on my relatives` farms in southern Ontario. Great little cartridge.
