New Guy questions

Hey Guys,

I'm new to the Forum and wanted to ask a couple of questions.

My main goal of joining up is to help a deceased friend's wife sell some of his guns and gear. I know Gunbroker is the most popular site for selling but wanted to see what you guys think about selling a couple of specialty items and what chances I have of getting someone to engage with a new guy with no posting or selling history on the site?

The specialty items include:
-custom benchrest rifle made by AC Burgess from North Carolina, 338 Lapua, Stiller Action, Hart barrel, Jewell trigger, McMillan benchrest stock, 19.2 lbs, 32.5" barrel measured with muzzle break, full length aluminum wheeled case.
-various benchrest supplies, including Sinclair rest, factory Lapua brand 338 ammo, boxes of 338 bullets, etc.

Please let me know what your suggestions are on selling this stuff to help a friend!

Thanks

First, sorry for your loss! This is exactly the right place for that type of gear. There’s a classified section - contact the admins though- I believe there are some anti fraud measures in place that might get in your way. I’m sure they can get you squared away.

First and foremost condolences on your loss.

Now to my thoughts. Your statement " My main goal of joining up is to help a deceased friend's wife sell some of his guns and gear." "Please let me know what your suggestions are on selling this stuff to help a friend!"

My thought is you have joined the site to use the classifieds.
I can not find a profile for you. (maybe my error)
Your one and only post was this, days ago when you joined.
You are selling for a friend. (Albeit for a good cause but it's one that I will not buy from.)
What state or country are you in? (May have missed it, but you name points to South Carolina)
TXPOP40 (?) sounded good to me also. Texas, no Nigeria.

Not meant to be disrespectful in any way merely answering your questions as I see them being asked.

Best of luck

Thank so for the reply. Yes, I'm in SC and no I've not posted anything for sale yet as I was waiting to see what kind of feedback I would get. I plan to post a few smaller items and hope to sell these and once delivered establish a positive profile.

Waltsc, would you be willing to ship the sold items prior to receiving payment if the buyer is a long time forum member, has a long record of positive transactions and has flawless feedback from other members?

There are quite a bunch of stand-up dudes on this site, and it's easy to view their buy/sell profiles.

Standard procedure here, and most other forums is to send payment for a purchase, and expect shipment after payment is received. As a new guy with no trade profile, you might consider reversing this system.

It might seem risky to ship the goods before you receive payment from someone who you don't know, but I'd do it myself in your situation knowing what I now do about the folks around here. Scammers and shysters don't last long around here, and the only guys you need to avoid are ones who like yourself, are new to this scene. jd

No, I would hope to receive verified funds before shipping. These are not my personal items (I am helping to settle an estate) and could not take risk on their behalf.

I appreciate the advice and realize the trust relationship required to execute these net transactions. Maybe after I have been a member for a while I will be able to gain some trust and others in me.

What I still don't understand is what builds your status to even be able to post something for sale?

One option is since those are ffl items ship them to the buyers ffl and have the ffl hold the items until you receive payment, then release the items to the buyer. That way they can inspect the item, make sure it's as described, and pay you via however you work out. Keep in mind using pay pal for ffl items can get the account closed and they will not cover goods and services protection for firearms

I'm a new guy in here but have plenty of sales on the hide and other pages. I'm waiting for verification to list some savage items and scopes as well. Maybe reference yourself to other pages you have had transactions on as well until you build some up here?

I'm also open to splitting the PayPal fees if that would make someone more comfortable. what do you think of that idea?

If you're using pay pal good and services for the rifle and something goes wrong with the deal, you will get no backibg from pay pal since it is a firearm. Use a third party and have the buyer send you funds through friends and family. No fees that way, don't make any mention of firearms if you go that route. The payment would be instant. They could do it from the ffl. You get funds, call the ffl, and let him proceed with the transfer after you're paid
