new guy needs help

looking to start reloading, not sure where to start
looking at all the stuff is overwhelming, thinking simple, looking at wilson hand die kits from a sinclar book, is this a good choice for a newbe or a standard press and die set??? any help in this would be great.

I can't imagine not having my Forster Co-Ax for a press. OTOH, for less money, the Lee Classic Cast is also a great press. Just the Wilson dies and a K&M Arbor press would also be a good start, but you'd still need a regular press at some point.

I think Sinclair sells a nice precision reloading book, but I can't remember the name, can't find it on their website, and can't lay my hands on my copy at the moment. Maybe someone else will have a recommendation.

How much do you think you're going to budget for this venture?

Whelan,

Lots of good help on this board. It would be much easier is you would share some details on what you are reloading for. Hunting, target shooting, plinking, bench rest, or etc. And what what caliber or type of gun you are reloading for. Do you anticipate reloading 150 rounds a year or maybe 2500?

rstreich, I no longer see that book available from Sinclair either. They have another one that is on about the same level that is called Precision Shooting Reloading Guide. I have both of them and reference back and forth all the time. Would be some very good reading for any beginner. Bill

i want to reload for hunting, was planing on starting out with the 223 and adding more from there. simce i am new to reloading and have nothing the cost is on my mind but i dont want to replace things after a year so i am thinking buy the best value i can find. not sure how many shells i will be reloading at this point, the 223 is a varmit gun mostly coyote some ground hogs, and then the deer guns.

The best advice I could give would be to take your time, read a few books and dig through several forums. Learn about how things work, the time they take, and what the prices are of different components.

Another completely different approach would be to do the opposite of what you want: Buy an inexpensive starter kit or buy a set of used components and just try it for a while to see what's involved. Experiment and experience it. Expect to sell off the whole batch in a year or so when you've decided what you really want.

The latter is probably the best approach. It's one thing to read about turning necks, for example, and quite another to sit down and do it on a few hundred cases.

Try to find sowmone is you area that reloads and you trust for having some common sense,I know that can be hard).

Ask to see their reloading set up. THen ask questions while there.

At this point you probably do not need anything like hand dies and would be very well served by an RCBS kit.

thanks for all the help, i think i just might buy a rcbs kit, i got a few bucks built up in cabelas bucks. since i don't no anyone using hand dies a regular press would probably be the best bet, thanks again
