New guy and 22 BR

Hello everyone, I'm new to the forum but have been peeking around at the info available here for a bit. My first post I thought I'd introduce myself. I'm a guy in Southern California that's starting to find interest in wildcats. As of now I'm quite interested in the 22 BR.

I've just started my journey of information gathering and am getting ready to start gearing up. I've been reloading for a while and forming brass and swaging is not unfamiliar to me. The biggest issue I'm facing right now is finding a rifle! It seems factory brass and rifles are a thing of the past.

My interest isn't just sitting on the bench and punching paper. Although it will happen the main purpose of this rifle will be varminting. I know there are great cartridges in production that are fantastic for that. But I'm very drawn and fascinated with everything of the 22 BR from brass forming, the extreme accuracy and precision, to the uniqueness of the cartridge and shooting something out of the ordinary.

Please reply and point me in a good direction for my venture. Thanks and I look forward to your replies. If you're in SoCal - Los Angeles are please chime in! Thanks guys!

Welcome to the forum,

Give Hendershots, Whittakers or First Stop Gun Shop a try....

They all deal with Cooper and Dakota rifles, these two maunfacturers build .22BR rifles.

There is a a Barnard action with a mounted 22 BR in the classifieds right now.

I have a remington 700 in 22 br and a ruger 77 in 22 br both shoot great I also have a pair of ruger 77's in 22 ppc ( they make 22ppc brass and 22br must be formed) the ppc shoots great also 30 gr of blc-2 38gr varmint grenade or 40 gr vmax took a ppc shooting prairie dogs yesterday. Always pleased greg

The 22BR is a good one. I have a couple of them. They're used on varmints. It's just stupid easy to make that cartridge shoot and using less powder the accuracy loads will equal 22-250 velocity. You're set on having one but honestly, I'd say go with the 6BR instead. Same accuracy and gets the same velocity with a 55 /58 as the 22BR gets with a 50, and it's also stupid easy to make that one shoot. Plus there's no necking down, just load.

i'm seriously thinking of getting a 22br. my right side was almost cripped by a stroke, so single shots work great(bolts sometimes are hard for me to open/close) the t/c encore with a 24" mgm barrel should work, not that i am try to get you to make this :D. lets see what you come up with!!! bolt, single shot, or whatever you want...

A TC Encore in 22 BR will be a nightmare to live with, and case life will be next to nothing - the Encore receiver does not lock up tightly, and cases stretch badly... especially cases with sharp, large area shoulders.

toyoka....I broke my neck 16mo ago and am recovering slowly ,,,,still have numbness from the elbos down and knees down both arms and legs,,,right hand is worst of all,,loosing lil finger and ring finger due to spinal chord injusry (cant type too well either,,,hahaha) and I can work a light bolt action better than a contender/encore,,,just reach over with your good arm/hand,,,,I relize every one has unique injury/weakness but full power loads in a Thompson make the trigger guard breech release very difficult to manipulate,,,,just my feeble ramblings,,,Roger

its funny, my 16 1/4" encore both 6.5 creedmoor and 20 vartarg can shoot .2 and .3 "(3 shots) all day long....makes kinda wonder...

Woodrwo -

What kinda' varmints, shooting how far away max; and in what State(s) .... might I ask ?

this cartridge is inherently accurate, so don't shortchange yourself with inferior components. a custom single shot action bedded in a good stock goes a long way in getting the best from the 22 BR. twist rate for most varmints is probably 1 in 12 or 1 in 14 and this limits you to certain bullet weights and subsequent freebore in the chamber. too much freebore has been my problem in a few builds...bullets had to be seated long in the necks to get good engraving. after component selection , decide on varmint's range and bullet weight, then chamber specs. loading for the cartridge is scarey easy...it just shoots!
