I don't usually like to change things on a classic gun but this particular Exemplar pistol is so far from original I thought it needed a better bolt knob. I was told by good authority by the maker (me) that it would give me at least two more targets each match just for the coolness factor.
Well, I only missed one at it's first longrange match so I figured that I'd somehow gain a magical point and finish 1 point above a perfect score this month. That didn't happen, a slight change of wind happened and overruled my hopes.
Anyway, it took me at least two weeks of agonizing about grinding off the round knob for the knurled tactical one I had made and just sitting there being patient. Finally just took the bolt to the garage and started on the belt sander and was committed from that point on. Still has a couple nicks from the belt sander that show that I have to smooth up and will probably leave it with it's natural aluminum finish, think it goes with the barrel.
I think on this particular application it fits but not sure about a stock Exemplar in it's original stock. It's done so no turning back and I'm happy with how smoother makes opening and closing the bolt. With the Henry Rempel bipod and a good rear bag I can chamber another round and still be centered on the target most times.
Think next project will be to make some type of better magazine follower under the chassis, this is a one off chassis by Accurate Rifle Systems but I think I can improve on that area a bit to help make magazine changing a bit smoother. Something more along the lines of the one I created for the ARS Izhmash chassis, really slick and smooth feeding in.
