New front rest prototype with pics

well I finaly finished my prototype heavy duty bench rest, it gonna be phase one of a two part system, the entire top assembly will be transfered to a big tripod type setup that ALOT lighter in weight and hopefully just as steady but desgined for F-class shooting, the Idea comes from a rest that a Great guy built for another member here "eddybo"

Well here is the Bench rest part of the equasion, its probably WAY over built but what the hell can't be to big right, its all either 316L stainless steel or 7075 Aluminum, it weighs in at 28lbs, all that left is to desgine the top for the bags.

As a former jarhead, I can tell you that in my opinion, overbuit is good.

I look forward to your F-Class version, although the current weight would not deter me from considering your rig for F-Class work. If you were to put F-Class feet, big round suckers to prevent it digging its way to China) on your current design its good to go for some of us. :)

Any idea what the finished rest would cost?

I have got some foot pads for this one, they are 3" round with a 1" wide by 1" long cone/spike in the middle, looks like everybody elses F-class feet.
The tri-pod will have 1.5" long 5/8" SS spikes with a 1/4" thick 3" disk threaded up on them. The center rest is the same as this one 4" bar stock iwth the hole bored in it and the corse adjustment knob, but it has 18" legs at 7 deg angle.

I haven't figured out any kind of cost, It would take me so long to make one in my spare time it woulden't be cost effective I don't think

I have been looking at some rest all over the web and some of those things look like they should have an M-2 mounted on them. I have decided that I'm just gonna use a Sinclair windage top instead of making my own, either Sinclair or Bald Eagle.

here is the F-class part of the duo, it uses the same adjustment post so all that required is just loosening the short knob and pulling the post out and dropping it in the tripod. the tripod measures 5.750" from tyhe ground with the claws sunk in to the top of the post then add another 1.5-2" for the bag, it may be a bit to high unless your using a tall bunny ear bag so the real deal is gonna have some improvements, the Radius of the tripod rest is 16".

As for having it painted or anodized I'm not sure, like I said these are just mock ups for a real build up. All the cuts on both of these were realy fast so their is a good deal of tool marks none of which coulden't be knocked off with some 180 grit. I may have them coated or somthing and try to sell them later. The tool marks you see in the base plate are mearly smudges it feels smooth as glass when you run your finger accross it, I was setting up a new Orion CNC and decided to make a couple quick passes to see what it would do., that was done with a 2.5", 6 tooth facing mill running at 6000 rpms and 70" inches of FPM with no coolant, we installed a plate to bolt parts to so that the T slots werent needed and when we made the final passes to square it up we ran the mill at 13,000 rpms 30" fpm with a 1000 psi vapor coolant purge, the finish was as bright as crome !! this tool is simply awsome but for a bit over 2 million dollars it better be, now if we can just get te programers to get their stuff together!!

well here are a couple pics of the tripod/F-class rest

It's kind of hard to tell from the pics... how long are the spikes on the F-Class feet?

I believe the F-Class rules preclude spikes sticking into the ground more than 2".

Nice and shiny, though. I bet if you combined it with a Shadetree or Farley Compact coax top it'd be one slick setup.

I don't want to answer for James, but it's my understanding that the spikes extend 2" from the base of the foot pad to the tip of the spike.

JeffVN

Jeff is correct the spikes are actualy 1.900" long from the bottom of the base to the tip of the spike to keep it legal.

As for the ability of reach, I'm 6'3" and its a bit of a strech for me to reach the thumb wheel, so I'm gonna have to re figure so things but it should work well with the longer handel like the coax style rest use.

I'm gonna be making a couple new models to try out, they'll be a little bit lower and not have as large of a hight adjustment, more so just the 3/4" threaded stud and what amout the rest uses. The current model uses a 1.125" threaded stud so things like the Shadetree rest woulden't work, and the 3/4" seems to be the standard.

I haden't realy decided to sell the rest but sveral folks have asked about it so I'm gonna sell it for cost of the materials a little bit of polishing and shipping. I still have to install the tool steel spikes in the adjustment legs and I was considering drilling, mill) a seried of holoes in the right hand side for shell holders

After talking to s few folks that know ALOT more about using these type of rest than I do it appears that the legs are a bit to long and the spike adjustment screw might be to short to compensate for shooting off of a slope.

Any of you guys have any ideas to add to a tripod desgine?

I dont think the legs are too long. In fact I wish mine reached all the way back to my rear bag. I shoot off of mine in my backyard often and I am dealing with a pretty good drop when I shoot my 800 yard target. It works great, buy works even better when there is no drop. Put a windage top on there and give it a try.
BTW your arms do not have to be very long to use it. After you have the windage top initially set the gun will basicaly return to battery so you do not have to fool with it. If that were a big concern I thinkthey make co-axial rest tops.

Andy, I tried to reply to your PM but you have it locked or somthing, also tried an E-mail butmy computer wasen't happy with it so not sure if it went through

JD
go ahead and make me a set of legs per regulations, I have a shadetree top on the bench model. I will take it off and use it on the F-class also. As of now you know more than I do. It seems you think I need two sets of legs and that seems fine with me, matter of fact darn good idea.'

Andh

Ok we'll do, try going into your control pannel and unlocking your PM function, I can't access it from a reply stand point or directly it doesen't even give the option.

that or E-mail me and we can disscuss the whole thing.

Any update on tripod??
looking to mount shadetree/farley coax top to it, would this be possible?
How much to have one made up to accept shadetree/farley top if you no longer have production of tripod.
ck pm from me JD
thnx KArl
