New F-Class Shooter: need help on zeroes

Hello all! I just purchased a Savage Model 12 F-Class rifle to begin shooting long range F-Class matches. I am pressed for time and cannot get to the range as many times as I want before the final match of the year to get good zeroes and work up a load.

Since there is only one local match left for the year, I figured I would just slap on my cheap Simmons scope,yeah, I know, but I am usually an iron sight shooter) to get a little experience and purchase a better scope during the off-season.

With this in mind, once I get zeroed at 100 yards, how manu MOA will I need to get on paper at 1000 yards? Also, can anyone suggest a decent 20 MOA base that costs less than $100?

If you are using a 308 it would be about 25 to 28 moa increase.EGW makes a base for the Savage for around $40.

It really depends on the bullet you'll be using and the velocity. It could be a lot more than 28 MOA come-up. Enough more to be completely off paper.

Sorry, I should have given the caliber and bullet info. I'll be shooting 6.5-284 with Sierra 142 match kings. I do not know the velocity yet since I haven't worked up any loads so figure somewhere between 2900 and 3000fps.

The EGW's are a fine bargain, but I would get a Ken Farrell base. They are all steel. I have about 6 and keep buying them cause because they work great.

KMSTX nailed it. At 3000 fps figure 25 MOA. At 2900 fps 27 MOA.

Has anyone used scope bases from Bench-Source? I saw their add on the 6mmbr home page and clicked on it to check them out. Their bases are aluminum and very reasonably priced.

Thoughts?

Most of us have piles of 'bargains' we quickly became unhappy with. My advice it to buy once, and don't look back. Ken Farrell bases are awesome, and worth the money. Bases and rings are an often overlooked part of the package. The Savage is an awesome rifle and a great value, don't handicap it now with bargain bases and rings. Weight is not an issue with Open F-class as 22# is the limit. Aluminum is for the benchrest game, saving every ounce, not F-class.

With 6.5x284 and 140/142 Berger's, JLK's, or Sierra's this should get you in the black
600yds 11.50 MOA
800yds 19.00 MOA
900yds 23.50 MOA
1,000yds 27.00 MOA

Temperature extremes will have an effect.
