New F Class build questions

I am new to competitive rifle shooting, but when I do something I go all in. I am looking into building and F T/R rifle in .308. After talking to my selected smith I am leaning towards Farley, Defiance, or Barnard action for the build, in that order. My question is that it seems very few F Class shooters are using a Farley action. Is this simply because of the problems they have had with wait times, or is this action not suited towards this particular style. I don't have a problem being different than others, and I don't mind waiting to get exactly what I want. I just want to make sure that what I choose is suited to what I want to do. I know that all three actions are top notch in construction, just curios as to why that Farley seems unpopular. Thanks for any input guys.

I shoot f-Class with a Farley action and really like them. My action is an earlier Farley I believe they were called a "Firefly" ( don't hold me to that) as opposed to the current Farley Black Widow. I have had the chance to observe both actions and my untrained eye see's no difference in them. Farley have always been considerded one of the smoothest actions, but you rarely see them outside of Point Blank competitions. They do have a built in recoil lug and the tenon length is the same as most of the 700 clones. While I shoot F-Open it should be the cats a$% for TR. Wait time I don't have a clue as I didn't get mine new, I am sure it won't be short, unless you do indeed find a used rifle and salvage the action.

Of the other two you mention, I also have a Defiance, it is a drop port in 6 dashers and it also is a very nice action. You would not go wrong with a Defiance, and I believe there wait times are really good. I was promised mine ( I did buy it new) in 60 days and recieved it in around 80 days or so.

The Barnard is also a fine action and the folks that have them are plenty happy with them. Now with that said getting a Barnard is the problem, right now there are none in the country and while you can get on the waiting list, they will not give a delivery date or even a guess as to when you may get one. I am having Gary Eliseo build me a tube gun chassis and I wanted a Barnard action for that build because I have only heard good things about them. After finding out that wasn't going to happen, I ordered a second Defiance a Mutant which Gary is familiar with, and had the same footprint as the Remington 700.

Good Luck with your choice...

Weight is normally the primary consideration for ftr. The trend is to put as much into the barrel as possible.
IMO - any custom action will be accurate and work out of the box...some are lighter than others.

Thanks for the input fellas. It is good to see someone is using a Farley for this purpose.

I realize that weight is an issue, I am sure that making the weight won't be a problem.

After finally talking to Farley today, I am pretty sure I am going to go with a Farley action. Apparently they have been so buys with rests that they haven't produced many actions in the last few years. But are now beginning to do actions again. The price is pretty good for a custom action and he answered all of my concerns.

Now the decision is on to choosing the right stock. There are too many stocks out there. Suggestions?

Depends if you want composite or wood. I shoot a Manners T2-A and it works well for me. It's not much to look at, but I wasn't building a beauty pageant winner when I started.

Precision Rifle and Tool build some really nice looking wood stocks.

I'm sure there are more out there, but if I was building another F-TR rifle these would be my choices. Either would work fine. Be ready to wait for a while, you'll probably have your action before you get your stock.
