New custom build, action help?

Hello everyone, I am doing a custom build. It is just going to be a long range target gun (1000 yards, maybe more once in awhile, sometimes less). I am just looking for the best accuracy. I am not doing competitions, its just for my own personal fun and shooting with friends (with gets super competitive sometimes ;D). Anyways, I just want the best. I'm not worried about money or weight of the gun. So far I have decided on Jewell trigger, Krieger barrel, Manners or McMillan stock, and Nightforce scope. For the life of me I cant decide on an action. Looking at BAT, surgeon, stiller, defiance, etc. Which is the best? The gun will not be used for hunting.

Thank you!

You would probably be well served with any of the actions you mentioned. Although you cant buy a new Surgeon without a barrel and stock attached to it anymore. If it were me I would go with the BAT.

I am with tim. I think you would be well served by the quality of the bat. The only thing I didn't like about a surgeon a friend had built was the sloppiness of the bolt in the receiver. For that kind of money I would expect better feel when operating the bolt and some of the machining wasn't that great. I have worked in a few machining compamys and we did really sweet work. You would also like the Stiller line of recievers, they are very nice quality. Another one to look at is kelblys line also and the grizzly is a nice clone of a beefed up remmy pattern if I am remembering it correctly. When buying a stock , get one that will ride the bags in your rest and rear bag so you can attain very good accuracy. Since you are not competing I would think about getting a jewel with at least a safety in case someone handles your rifle. Take a look at bartlein, brux to get a better delivery time. Brux is pretty good making the time on most orders. This is just my opinion on how and why I would do it.

Nesika model MT for the action and if you want a barrel right now just check out Bruno's. They most likely have one in stock. Think about a stock with a 3" wide forend and an F-class rest from Viper. Buy Once Cry Once...... 8)

Thank you so much for the replies. I think its narrowed down to the Defiance deviant and the BAT. I'm in no rush for the build so if there is a wait to get either I don't mind. The deviant seems to be very popular, tight, and very smooth from peoples reviews. Don't see many reviews on the BAT but I'm sure it is good too.

I think you are shorting yourself by not considering the Barnard P. It comes with one of THE BEST triggers available, needs no action truing, comes with a small firing pin that fits the bolt face properly out of the box, is extremely stout and has a wonderful feel when manipulating the boot. The only downside is it's not the best looking action, but I have grown to appreciate them.

I have TWO B.A.T. Actions. One for the 6PPC the other for the 30BR. I believe they're one of the finest actions in today's market. Extremely smooth and tight.

Accuracy will come from your barrel, properly made dies/ammo, and a great deal of time behind the trigger. Any of the custom actions, including a trued factory action, will work.

600 yard world record shot at Piedmont gun club a while back by Rodney Wagner .336 with a Bat I pulled the target you could cover them up with a dime and have room left over ;)

I guess ill have to think about which caliber I want. I definitely have plenty of time behind the trigger as I have a large background in long range shooting under high pressure situations over seas, can't talk much more about it, so to say the least I have a lot of experience with the 308, 300 win, and 338 lapua. I was thinking something different like maybe a 6.5x47 lapua or 6.5x55. I guess I will just have to pick out of a bag on either a BAT or Defiance action.

No opinion on the BAT because I don't have one, but do have a defiance and love it. Bought it second hand to get into the 600 yrd benchrest game. Smooth and tight. Can't say enough good about their customer service. No issues, just wanted specific before I bought it and a different scope base setup. If I were to build another rifle I wouldn't hesitate to give them a call.

No more so than any other of the round-action customs.

The Kelbly Atlas is their 700 pattern action. It is a fine action and should be considered if someone is going to go right bolt/right port.

From what you've mentioned, if you don't have to lug it around, I'd recommend building a 300 WSM along the F-class lines, only some heavier. You would have good wind-cheating BC, longer barrel life than the hot 7mms and the heavy weight would make the recoil manageable.

I have Borden actions. Like them a lot. Jim is a class guy to do business with. I don't know what action he uses for magnum bolt face cartridges. I shoot a 7 Shehane in his BRM action. It works flawlessly.

Recently, I've had two Hawk Hill custom barrels. Great barrels. Less well known and, consequently, better delivery times.

Your stock would depend on what kind of shooting you would be doing...bench, prone or whatever. I sure do,admire the new GRS stocks at Kelbly's...

My current favorite long range scope is the NightForce Competition. If it's too salty, look at the NF BR.

That's just a bunch of brain storming. Take it FWIW.

I have been reading a lot about the 300wsm. Seems like an awesome cartridge. The 6.5x55 seems very very capable compared to these other 6.5's (like the 6.5x47 lapua, 6.5 creedmoor). But that is a really good suggestion, ill have to seriously consider the wsm. Thank you!

You won't find the 6.5x55 to have any advantage over the other 6.5s. More capacity, yes. Usable, no. And, of course, there is the barrel life issue...

Ballistic coefficient with manageable recoil is the program. Weight and a muzzle brake manage recoil.

I'd build a 300 WSM for the Berger 230, as much barrel as I could stand with a muzzle brake on the end and weight to balance it out. Put a big NF or March on top. It would be hard to beat without going to something esoteric like the 30 Boo Boo.

Well I was a Studebaker guy for years, went to Ford, Plymouth, and now a GMC. I have owned them all and they are all good.
Yes, I have owned Porsches and VWs also.

I have two Bordens and one BAT. I like the smoothness of the Borden best. My Borden actions are the RimRock, My BAT is the 3 lug. I do not like the force required to extract on the BAT.

I have two long range bench rest guns. One a 6BRX light gun and a 284 WIN heavy gun.

Both have Savage Precision target actions and one has a Rifle Basiks SAV-2 trigger and the other is, as I write, getting an evolution trigger installed by Sharp Shooters Supply.

You may even like the accutrigger 6oz pull. In any case, the action will allow you to be the limiting part of the accuracy equation and at a decent price. Plus, you can get a pre-fit barrel from a number of quality suppliers and do the gunsmithing your self!

This is a very true statement. I have a 6br with a Bear benchrest stock and Lawton barrel. Shot a .190" and a .154" three shot group with a 75gr. V-max bullet to boot! what was the action? a trued Remington 700...

Tony.
