New Big Boss II has a problem

I received a new Big Boss II today and got it setup and immediately found a problem.

When moving the charging handle up or down, I can hear and feel the ram dragging through the hole in the press.

Disconnecting the linkage from the ram, the ram moves smoothly through the press. It's difficult to reinstall the pin for the linkage back through the ram since this is where the problem is. There is no adjustment for any of the linkage.

Anyone have this issue before?

Assuming that your ram has been lubricated - if not, do that first. I just fixed that exact issue with my Rock Chucker that I tore down and cleaned up. There is a double ended bolt that connects the link arms from the base of the press to the block where the ram is bolted (the block where the arm is screwed in). If the two nuts on either end of the bolt are too tight, the ram can drag. Loosen one nut 1/4 turn. If still dragging, loosed the other nut a 1/4 turn. If that helps but the ram still drags try another 1/4 turn.

I spoke with Redding this morning and this is exactly what they told me to do.

After working with this procedure for awhile, it is now usable. It still drags a little when it's connected to the linkage, but nothing like before.

Thanks for your help.

Much as I hate to say it, especially with a new press, take the press completely apart, inspect and clean all bores and shafts, including the ram. Put fresh lube in the bores and on the shafts.

Make sure you don't tighten the linkage nuts too tight. When I got mine, they were tightened so much that they made the ram hard to raise and lower. Since they are a nylon locking nut, they aren't going to loosen on their own. I just loosened them a bit, and mine operates smooth as silk.
