So I just ordered a new barrel.....Bartlein 5r 8 twist 22.

And I need a reamer.....

for a 22BR, going to shoot the 80SMK,

My quesiton is.......where do I get one? Should I buy one? I've heard you can rent them?

Lets hear some suggestions.

give dave kiff at PTG a call, I would talk to him personally, and get one to your specs. tell him what bullet you intend to shoot and how much freebore you want and nk diameter, etc.

Buy one to your specs.

Don't rent one... renting a reamer is like renting a woman, you get what's left over after everyone else has used it.

Thanks guys!

Any info on what a new reamer would cost? I've never bought one before.

Trying to get a dollar figure going for this build.

Thanks

You can use that $135.00 reamer once, and then resell it for at least a $100.00......
Pretty hard to rent one for the difference...

xawanted: Another advantage of having your own reamer, and keeping it for future chambers, is that the brass you used in the "old" chamber will fit without problems in your new chamber.

I never could figure out why someone would spend $320+ for a custom barrel blank and another $200(?) to have it chambered and fitted using whatever reamer the gunsmith happened to have available at the time. Or, for that matter, renting a reamer of questionable quality and an unknown history.

Your own reamer, cut to your specs is the way to go. My gunsmith smiles when I hand him a new barrel blank along with a fresh, virgin reamer. Sounds like you have made that decision.

Yes sir, I haven't done with a brand new reamer but I thought what the heck might as well go ahead and do everything right.

Just need to find the "right" gunsmith now!

I had dave make me a .408 chey tac reamer and .300 wsm reamer to my specs plus a headspace gage. it was $147 plus $35 for gage for each reamer and gage. 6-8 weeks turnaround time and they delivered spot on.

We are getting back to faster deliveries , after all the machines and training we should be. Remember we now offer a 48 hour turn around if its a emergency . Most of the common reamers are on the shelf but common reamers may not be what you need . A custom reamer is what gives you the edge . One built to your cartridge or die and has the perfect parallel throat to match the bullet . Thanks Dave

Or if you are in a hurry, we stock many of Dave's reamers at Grizzly. Here's a link for the .22BR:

The full list of what we stock is here:

We have been selling Dave Kiff's reamers for several years and all my personal reamers are made by him as well.

Yes , Shiraz is correct we have shipments of chamber reamers , special cutters and floating reamer holders going out to Grizzly every week . It sure helps if a person needs something out the same day.

Swear to God I was just going to ask this very question. I just saw a Savage 16 in LH come available so I bought it. It will donate the action for a build... but I'll start another thread for that.
I learned that I should buy, then sell and it's a reasonable cost at $135ish.

Good stuff!
