What is your purpose in painting/coating it? If for looks, rattle can. If for rust, maybe try the coatings Brownells sells in a spray can.
If I knew it would only be on there a year, I'd do nothing more then leave a film of oil on it after handling. Not worth the effort in my opinion. As you alluded to, barrels are consumables.
