New! ...and have an ammo question.

Hi! I'm new to the site, and fairly new to long-range shoosting. I've done some 100-200 yard shooting with an AR working on technique and form, but decided it was time to step up to .308 and go bolt action. I just made a trade today on a custom built .308 with a Stiller action, jewell trigger, Hart barrel, and McMillan stock...obviously probably too much gun for me, but I'm looking forward to continued learning!

This is my first "precision" firearm and I want to get the ammo right. It is chambered for 95 Palma. I've done some research and seen that 155gr palma loads can be fired out of other chambers, but can I fire heavier bullets from my chamber safely? Do you guys have a recommendation for ammo? I plan on getting into reloading down the road, but for now am looking for factory match-grade. I'll be target shooting and am moving close to a 1000 yard range soon. ;D

Thanks.

One of the better is federal gold medal match and blackhills match, it isn't cheap but it shoots. If you end up in a situation where your 95 palma reamer doesn't have enough freebore then you have problems and are limited to 155 loads and lighter.

Thanks, so basically it's stick a round in and see if the bolt closes?

What is the twist of the rifling in the barrel?
The barrel is a 1/10 twist.

95 Palma has .086" freebore. Your chamber will shoot the 175g SMK's fine but nothing heavier. The Federal Gold Medal Match ammo will do great. The 10 twist barrel will shoot everything you want. When you are ready to start reloading I would suggest buying a RCBS Rock Chucker Supreme reloading kit, Lee shell holders set, pair of calipers, .308 Win dies (Lee collet, Redding body & Forster seater), Wilson case trimmer with .308 case holder and a powder trickler. This will have you in business! You will obviously need brass, bullets, primers and powder.

Thanks. I'll make a note of that reloading gear to check out when I do start looking into it.

So I should be fine with just about anything at and under 175gr? I was mainly interested (if I could) in trying 155, 168, and 175.
