New 300 RUM Build

My bro in law got bit by the bug from me sending him pictures of my guns and long range shooting.

He "commissioned" me to put a gun together for him...gave me no budget. He just wanted it to be big, nasty and loud.

I did all of the threading and chambering on my buddies lathe (with his assistance).

Reamer was a PTG SAMMI spec 300 RUM

Snowy Mountain Mag Action with their 20 moa steel rail (nitrided bolt and action)
PTG Bolt and pin assembly
PTG .250 Lug
Brux Barrel 1-10" (28" without brake 29.5 with. Heavy palma countour)
RWS Brake
PTG BDL bottom metal with ACIS modified mag
HS Precision stock (repainted with duracoat)
Leupold 4.5-15X50 LR scope (send it back to Leupold and had MI turrets put installed)

I had to open the ejection window of the stock because the Snowy Mountain Action has a 1/2 larger window than the Rem 700 LA.

I repainted it in OD green with slight black webbing and a few flecks of gray. It turned out pretty nice.

The magazine is a 338 Lapua ACIS that I had to modify. The Lapua case is quite a bit shorter than the 300 RUM case. The reinforcing stamp in the magazine had to be removed for the RUM case to fit.

I doesn't appear to have lost any rigidity and it works flawlessly now.

All in all it weighs 12.5 pounds and it fairly well balanced for the length of barrel.

I am going to bring it to him next weekend.

Hopefully it shoots

That looks great! I have a 30-378 and am considering switching to the RUM. the WEatherby doesn't shoot to my expectations. So let us know how this bad boy shoots.

Hoir, Take your 30/378 Weatherby and order a Bartlein Medium Taper 31" blank and then tell me this round wont shoot to your expectations. I went with a 1-13" twist because the heaviest bullet I will ever shoot is a 155 gr. With the 125 Gr. Noslers, Its cooking a little over 4,000 fps. I dont shoot any further than 500 yards and trust me when I say this, Lay the crosshair right on the back at this range and watch things go airborne!!

Tuna, That is some mighty nice work!! What kind of trigger did you go with?
Sorry to hijack your post.

I just put a factory trigger in it...I know its a shame
I put a different spring in it and its decent

I had a Rifle Basix laying around, but it didn't fit well. It was so tight that the trigger housing was binding the sear safety cam.

I'll add a Jewell when I can find one in stock.

I just don't know if he can "appreciate" a Jewell. He's not a very avid shooter, but I think he'll turn over a new leaf when he get his new gun

Jewel triggers are top notch. Good part about them, I live about 42 miles from the shop. With Safety and bolt release, They run around $210.00 at the shop. What makes it so much better is, I go to pick my trigger up and they always set it at my desired weight. Just be sure to let him know not to put any kind of oil or graphite in the trigger. Jewell designed these triggers to be used without any kinds of lubrication. I learned the hard way!! Ha!!
Good thing about the rifle you built is it is one He should Love to show others. I Love setting mine up on a range and watching everyone cringe when I unleash the beast!! Ha-Ha!! Congrats to You and Him on a Really Nice Rifle!! Usually, Brother In Laws dont rate high enough to build them something this Nice!!

Nice looking rifle. You might as well have put it through its paces and found a load for the beast. ;D
