New 26 Nosler, first thoughts?

Sounds like a barrel burner.
I don't know if I would say a recessed rim is more accurate then a belted one.

I doubt that nosler would invest time and money into something that radical to shoot. It probably isnt any worse than the 6.5x284 in reality.

For a hunting round in this class I'd bet you could take 10+ animals a year for the next 40-50 yrs. It's still under the Lazz. 6.71 Blackbird. Just don't take it PDoggin.

The 284 case has a rebated rim so I don't think that would be a factor. Barrel is probably no worse then the 264 Win Mag. When it first came out folks said the same thing and barrel steels are better now then they were then. Might make a good mountain rifle but I doubt that it would be any better then a 270 Win. with 130 gr bullets.

Like the 7mm STW and the 30-378 Wby, these things make a big splash when introduced and then settle down to a niche. I personally don't see the need to burn that much powder for marginal gain over a .264 WM or 6.5-.284. It did put additional focus on Nosler for a bit, and maybe that's the point.

Probably a wicked hunting round that kills the barrels as fast as the Animals!

+100! :)

If you didnt shoot it a lot at targets and keep the round count down, it will probably last many years as a hunting rifle. But I bet Nosler has it cornered with their overpriced weight sorted Norma...I mean Nosler Custom brass ;)

What is the parent case anyhow? The 375 Ruger? If so, that is WAY too much of an overbore. Just wasting powder at that point.

I guarantee it will have a very short commercial life. Theres just no niches left to fill in 6.5mm.

.534 Rim, .550 Base, .5275@ shoulder, 35* shoulder angle, 2.59 case length, so yes a shorter modified RUM or Slightly lengthened (.009) modified 7 mm Dakota. The SAAMI specs are on Noslers web site.

CAN IT BE ANY BETTER THAN THE 6.5-STW, THAT LAYNE SYMPSON CAME OUT WITH 25 YRS. OR SO AGO??????????????????????

Nope.

Or how about the 6.5-300 Weatherby that's been around forever.

I can push a 130gr bullet at right around 3300 fps in my 6.5 Rem mag with a 26" barrel using only about 51-53gr of RL-17. The 264 Win Mag is easily capable of up to 100 fps gain over my 6.5 Rem mag. So this 26 Nosler is basically claiming nothing more than 264 Win Mag speeds but burning a LOT more powder. I bet it has about a 100 round throat tops.

You can only push a bullet down a bore so fast before pressures get too high. Doesn't matter how much powder you put behind it. Then the barrel really takes the punishment

Dont know how bad it will eat barrrol but I will find out. I have ordered all parts to build one. Just waiting. Will see if I like it better than the 6 284 or my 6.5 284. been looking to make somthing out of a doner rifle so just a fun project.

My son mentioned this cartrage to me yesterday. We both just finished building our 6.5 Grendels. See what specs are , I might build one off a Mauser action or something and see how it does? Sounds like allot of barrel burn to me to. However, there are some interesting powders out there that may prove effective and extend barrel life? Reloader 25 perhaps? Tubbs, gives it a thumbs up for a try in 243 with 115 dtacs? Sometimes the right thing works. It is often hard to understand why but the BC of bullet tech is making a huge impact , and will for years to come. Just my thoughts?

I will be getting one when they come out. I don't get out hunting near as much as I would like, so it wont hurt me if the barrel only lasts 700 shots. In most hunting situations, I wont be firing too many rounds in a row, so barrel heat wont be an issue.
I had always been thinking about a 7 RUM, but then thought I don't need a gun firing a 7mm, already have the bigger ones.
