After much thought and wait, it's finally here. I picked up my 257 Roberts Ackley Improved last week. Now, all i need is the time to go out and run some rounds down the barrel. My dad had a standard 257 Roberts years ago and always said he regrets trading it away. So, in my thoughts of my next deer rifle, i couldn't resist. But if course i had to try the improved version! Here are the specs.

Trued up Remington 700
24" Krieger #4, 1-10 twist
HS Precision sporter stock
Plain old BDL floor plate
Timney 510 trigger
Barrelled action is cerakoted
Bushnell Elite 4500 4x16
Talley one piece rings

Very nice.

Many years ago I had a .257A.I. I used for varmint hunting. It had a 26" 1-12 barrel. I remember my load was 55.0grs of IMR 4831. It would push 85gr Ballistic Tips at 3550f.p.s. I also had a load for Deer that used a Hornady 100gr. Interlock that moved along at 3300.. I can't remember what the load was BUT I do remember it too was IMR 4831. Both loads were incredibly accurate..

Im starting to look at the Ackley loads. Im wanting to test the 100 & 117grn sierras with H4350. I'm not finding much of any data for the Hodgon powder, plenty for the IMR and AA 4350. Has anyone here actually ran the H4350?

Lower node but grouped well. 22” barrel.

If you have it, take a good look at RL-17 - via my .257 Ack. Imps, this powder produces 3330 FPS (Oehler & Magnetospeed & 24" BBLs) with 110 Gr. bullets - this at very reasonable pressures (long brass life) and excellent precision. On targets, out to 700 Yd., RL-17 has also proven pretty temperature insensitive. First day at THE RANCH, each fall, I verify ZEROs, come-ups, and groups every 100 Yd. out to 700Yd. - regardless of weather, the RL-17 has delivered reliable performance.

Since it became available, for the 110 Gr., and up, bullet weights, via my .257 Ackley BBLs, RL-17, has been my, "go to", powder: it delivers a whopping 230 more FPS (per Alliant's intro hype), at somewhat lower pressure than my previous, "stand by", load using H-4831.:)

Is your pic turned 90 Deg. to the right (vertical group) - if yes, and you're not getting any excessive pressure indicators, your rig may want a little more powder. RG

I'm glad to see that someone else believes in Re17 as opposed to all the internet experts who think otherwise! I've been using it for years without running into problems with temp sensitivity.:D

Thanks Randy!

I use it in a bunch of calibers, probably RL-17 & Benchmark are my 2 favorite powders.

I was on a quest for years to get a 1" group. In 2002 I got a 0.45" 5 shot group at 100 meters with a 257 Roberts Ackley I built on a VZ24 action with a Lothar Walther light varmint barrel.

257 Roberts Ackley improved rimmed 10-25-2012.jpg
That buck was so long his nose drug on the floor like an elk.

In 2012 I built a 257 Roberts Ackley Improved rimmed on a Uberti clone of a Win 1885 falling block action with a Shilen barrel. I shot 4 deer with it in 2012.
Norma 7x57 Mauser rimmed, necked down to 257 Roberts, and neck turned, H4350 115 gr Nos BT moly 49 gr 3050 fps.

257 is my favorite caliber.......I have 4 of the standard Roberts and 5 of the Ackley improved including an Ackley built by Parker himself.........just finished a lightweight version on a savage action bartlein bbl.....go to deer load 115 nosler ballistic tips or 115 berger using IMR 8208 XBR.....you have a fine looking piece of iron there good luck with it
