Never seen this before.... case head thickness difference

I pulled out some norma 7.5X55 swiss brass to load again. All has 1 firing on it..

I was going to prime cases in my 21st cent. Hand primer, all the cases went in the shell holder find and primed except 2 cases. Pulled out the calipers.. sure enough all case heads/rims were .061 and these two were .064.

Never seen this...

For shits and giggles I chucked them up in the case lathe, and shaved off 3 thousanths off the case heads. Both at .061 like all the other cases, slipped into the primer tool like normal and primers seated...

Honestly I feel they are fine to shoot still. Stamps on the case head still show by all means, .003 isnt much... puts them in check with all the others... everything looks perfectly fine...

Weird though...

Probably came from different lots of brass, or from beginning of machine setup. I have found this to be a common occurrence when sizing large quantities of mixed headstamp brass i.e. 223 and 308 where you get military and commercial mixed. Always find that one headstamp that doesn't want to fit the shell holder. I actually had to replace a Lee shell holder recently that had wore enough to become loose on common commercial brass. Some of the wildcatters using 444 Marlin brass have to shave all of their brass to fit recesses too shallow for them to fit.

I donno.. its weird.. it came in a box of 20 cases...

I had 50 rounds of black hills 223 brass and all but one fit the shell holder. No way it was going to work short of the lathe.

A few years back I bought a few bags of Winchester 243WSSM. About half fit the shellholder. Some were loose, some were snug and the rest you couldn't push in with all you could push. Matt

This isn't anything new. I've had several Winchester 284 brass that wouldn't fit a shell holder. I even have had a couple cases out of 500 Lapua 6.5x284 that don't fit my hand primer.

Since they were fired and resized , you've now changed headspace . Why didn't you cut on the other side ? The extractor cut , this way you will fit your shell holder and not change headspace .

True, didnt think of that. I was kinda mind boggled to begin with on it so I played with it just to see... im not worried about it, just for an ol schmidt and ruben, fun to shoot and stupid accurate open sight for what it is..
