Ok, I'm in need of a good quality Benchrest Gunsmith. So those of you willing to recommend one, I'd would greatly appreciate hearing from you. PM, Cell call, Ect. I have all the compontes to make up 6 Rifles from Varmint to Benchrest. So, I do have a fare amount of work to be done and would really like to get started on them.

Unfortunitely I live in the West Coast of Northern California. Not on the East Coast. So, I would really like to find someone that I may drive to and see face to face.

Your time and efforts in this quest is greatly appreciated.

couldn't do a FTF since it's the other side of the country, but I just got some work done my SMITHS CUSTOM GUNS and Tim smith the owner did some of the best work I have ever seen. I would recommend them to anyone looking for top quality work.

He did my 7SAUM and it is shooting lights out

The late Del Bishop used a smith from WA state by the name of Steve Kostanich. I have seen his name listed by many winning competitors in Benchrest. You may reach him at 360-748-0705. Good shooting...James Mock

May not be as close as you would like, but a very accomplished competitor and also a very capable gunsmith (not sure if the bellow is still current, though I believe so):

Nothing bad about any listed. Remember that the USPS goes all over the continental USA. Spend a little time researching all of them.

There are a few in north Carolina and Virginia that are well known.

Steve Kostanich has rebarreled and smithed 5 guns for me. I shoot critters in MT so all my guns are field guns but all of them shot between .4 and .7 at 200 yds. Steve is a fine Smith and a great guy to work with.

Butch: That is the truth. For critter guns they must be able to group less than .8 at 200 otherwise they are rebarreled, rebedded, worked on or deposed of.

But will they do it all day long? ;) Just kidding, it had to be asked.

I'm guessing those numbers are intended to be MOA and not inches, right?

I'm not saying that every single group fired is that small. But the majority are if I do my part. I don't shoot paper with these guns they are reserved for Dogs. Dogs are serious business with me. I've been shooting them for over 30 years. I take 7 rifles and made three trips to MT two years ago (was unable to go last year because of illness) the empty brass from the last trips weighted 47 pounds. I check fire the rifles b/4 the first trip each year and they must shoot groups .4 to .8 like I said. I'm not bragging as most bench rest rifles shoot even far better than that. The measurements are given in inches at 200 not MOA. The rifles are all tuned Remingtons along with one McMillian and all wear Kreiger barrels. I like to seat the bullets from 7 to 12 thousands off the lands. For testing I try to shoot when there is little or no wind. If you wish I could try and post a few pix of targets shot but I really don't know how to do that. One of my hunting partner shoots bench rest and I've see him shoot one hole groups at 100. I don't know why you guys are surprised with my statements.

Irv,
Almost all BR shooters shoot one hole at 100. Some 1 hole groups can be .800. Ask your gunsmith what wins at 200yds.
