Need your thoughts on what type of rear bag to buy.

First I want to thank every one for the good advice over the last year on what Type of scopes , rings , rest, etc to buy. I have had a lot of health issues the last year 1/2 and have always been a hunter and not much of a target shooter. Will now getting into the target shooting heavy. Man you have to have a heavy bill fold for this sport. Ha ha ha. Anyway...
I just bought a nice rest , bald eagle bottom and hill shade top with joy stick from a member here. Rest came with a nice front bag , he said a little wide for my guns because he shoots a wider stock then most I guess. Very nice set up. Excellent condition he has 2 other rest and did not need this one. I will be only shooting from a bench because of both knees being replaced , cannot get off of ground good after shooting.
Question.....For right now I think I will try the front rest bag that rest came with even thou it might be a little wider then I might need but what kind of rear bag will i need ? I will be shooting these type of guns off rest and on bench only.
AR10 6.5 creedmoor with a magpul collapseaball stock , Ruger m77 predator hawkeye 6.5 creedmoor with big laminated stock. Savage fv12 223 , and a Tikka 243. I am a Little worried about the AR10 magpul stock , not sure if it would slide very good in the rear bag rest ? From what I see here I should get a rear bag that is slick that stock would slide a little under recoil ? Please be specific on brand and model number of the bag , I don’t know anything about them. Also is there a measurement you guys use to determine what size of front and rear bags a shooter need ? If so how do you tell ? Thanks folks. Marty

The width of the bottom of your stock that would ride in the rear bag is key to how your bag will be made. EXAMPLE: My .260A.I. sits in a Kelbly stock. The bottom of the stock that rides in the rear bag is 5/8" wide. I ordered a rear bag with the stitching between the ears to be set at 9/16th of an inch. The height of the bag can be measured when you are at the range. Take your front rest out with the rifle you will be using and set it up on a rear bag so that the rifle is level. Measure the height from the bench to the bottom of the stock, you will have the correct height. NOW, armed with that info, go to the Protektor web-site and look at the bags (I prefer the DOCTOR rear bag) to see which you might prefer. Once you got an idea, call Protektor and talk with them. They are very helpful. I have a few suggestions: 1.) get an extra layer of leather to wrap around the body of the bag. This helps immensely to keep the bag from settling / sagging. 2.) By determining the height, you will find out how thick of a base on the rear you need to have to reach the desired height. 3.) Order the "Silver Slick-Top" material to aide in even rearward movement of the rifle under recoil. 4.) Have them fill the bag for you with HEAVY SAND. They will do these things for you if you ask them. They are EXCELLENT people to work with..

I think you're right about the magpul stock. You may either need to change the stock or use a squeeze bag with that rifle.

Do you think I would be able to use all the guns I listed in post in on the same rear bag and the same rear bag ? Marty

The standard protektor rabbit ear will probably work 'ok' with all but the AR. For ideal match to a stock contact them as mentioned above.

A front bag that is slightly too big for a hunting type forearm may be entirely unacceptable. I think there is a good chance you may need at least 2.

You should think about if it's worth it to you to come up with a way to add front bag riders to these guns. A 3" wide flat rider and bag is a lot better than the hunting forearm even with an ideally fitted bag.

Or even ordering a true benchrest style stock for one of the actions.

Folks....Thanks for all the advice here again. Kzin....I am going to go to youtube and see how a bag rider works the bag rider Idea. I think it some kind of plate that fits on the front sling stud of a rifle and then that I guess is some how bolted or screwed down to the front rest. So a bag rider is permanently attached to front sling post , you don’t take it off ? I could just keep it on even if I wanted to use these guns for my 3 yearly prairie dog hunts in North Dakota. I have one that screws into the sling stud hole on an AR varmint tube.
I have another that slides into the accessory rail of my Anschutz 64 MPR or Savage F-TR
They both change easily back and forth.
I end up not using either very often because I bought outright bench guns eventually!

For rifles that don't support either of those I see quite a few do-it-yourself woodworking projects at shoots and on the internet.
I'm the last guy you'd want to ask for help with that :(
I've even seen guys saw the toe off a regular hunting buttstock to make a flat spot to ride the rear bag.

Kzin. Thanks for good advice here. So they way these bag rider things work is that it is a metal or plastic plate maybe 4 inches wide and 2 or 3 inches deep. They just screw down we’re your front rest bag would be in your front rest and then attach to your front rifle forearm ? If that is the case I guess the idea is for your rifle not to move on the front rest ? But would that also stop your gun from sliding in the back rest ? I have never attended a bench match shoot. Going to go to one in about 3 weeks just to watch. I should be able to see some set ups and talk to shooters too. Marty

Usually 3" wide as that is the rule for f-open and I think a lot of benchrest.
Probably 6ish inches long.

NO! The front rider is firmly attached to the rifle but definitely is meant to slide on the front bag!

The second article here is on what they call front plates. I call 'em riders. I've heard them called sleds.

The commercial riders are metal or plastic. Most of the DIY jobs I've seen are wood.

Kzin. Thanks again for your help. I might contact you again for some advice if that is ok. Thanks. Marty
