Need some help with Palma sight diopter lens

Shooting when I can

So i am trying to figure out how what diopter lens to get. Or if i even need one. Or how to get some magnification from a lens

I have 20/20 un corrected vision

Using a PNW rear sight with a gehmann .5 to 3.0
Riles front sight 4 to 6

I shoot 300 yards at my local range and 600 and 1000 when i can.

First question is what can't you see?

If you have 20/20 then those shots should be Xs.

That said, with old eyes, I use a .5 lens on the muzzle side of my front sight. Makes the target bigger and sharper.

I tried rear lenses, and they just didn't do the job these 64 year old eyes needed.

I can see just fine, but i keep hearing guys using lens to give some more magnification and a crisper sight picture at 600 and 1000 yards

The magnification is provided by the front eagle eye (e/e being either a 0.3 or a 0.5 dioptre). The magnification however also magnifies any eye/focus problems, minor though these may be in your case.

The crisper picture is provided by a lens in the rear sight and is there to bring the aiming black back into focus.

Even with good vision you might still need a minor correcting lens in the rear of -0.25 or +0.25 depending on whether you are slightly short or long sighted.

But some people get a poor sight picture simply because the band of white around the black is too small.

The rear lens can also adjust for astigmatism.

Martin.

I was told to open up the front sight apature all the way. To make sure the four corners of the target are in the front sight.

I will look into the rear lens as a possible solution. During the mean time i will just keep shooting and work on my position.

You can open up the front sight to "frame" the target, it might work for you. Alternatively, open it up just enough to give you about 2MoA of white space between the outer edge of the black aiming mark and the inner edge of the ring. Then try increasing it by 0.1mm up to the point where you have it now, when you "frame" the target.

However, if you use a 0.5 dioptre with your 4.0 - 6.0 front sight and are using ICFRA targets, you will not have much white even at the maximum opening of 6.0 when shooting at 300.

i will try to frame the target on my next match and close it by 1mm every 5 shots until i find that i am dropping points
