Need some help with Dasher....

Had posted awhile back about fire forming Lapua 6 br brass to Dasher. With all the help here, I made false shoulders, loaded 105gr Bergers at touch and put 29.7 gr Varget. Well, ended up being pretty accurate....Tied for 1st today at a match , and won the shoot off with that ammo.....NOW, for the question....if I wanted to replicate the performance of that load, would I load the fire formed cases to the same load, velocity, keeping the touch seating depth, or, am I now on a quest to find a load that matches that one??? Seriously, the guy's here have always had the answers, this is why I ask...Thanks for any help...rsbhunter

You should be able to load it back with the same charge. Try a couple of tenths more if you think you need to.

Time to start over with the fire formed brass in my opinion. If you wanted to shoot 6BR loads (although very accurate), why go to the trouble of fire forming for 6 Dasher. Use the space you just created to get the extra horsepower you were looking for.

Ok, I can see the thinking of both replies, and I appreciate both taking the time to answer. As to the staying at br level of performance, I know the velocity is lower than what it is capable of, by a good margin. The main goal of this rifle is accuracy, and being able to knock steel plates over @ 2,3,385 and 500 meters. I also have 2 6mm Norma Dasher that are loaded to a higher node, so I might keep this at the level it is now.....I guess I'm trying to find out if the increase in case capacity will totally throw the "node" out? I may not be phrasing it correctly... rsbhunter

Yes I do understand the question and as mentioned I think u can load it back without going up in powder charge very much at all. Bump it a couple tenths if you need to.

I don’t have a Dasher, but I have two 6 BRAs. Both shot excellent while fire forming and then I had to work for good loads with fire formed brass. In fact after almost 500 rounds, I still haven’t been able to match the accuracy that I saw while fire forming for the 1:8 twist.

Oh, I can replicate the loads, but it's gonna cost me $100+ for 6br brass and time to form false shoulders....but honestly, I'll try some stuff with Varget and see what happens.. Thanks for the info...rsbhunter

Your formed Dasher cases with more case volume than a 6BR will likely not get the same velocities you had when fire forming. Don't settle on "just good enough", now is the time to tune a load to your rifle. Your Dasher will want to shoot, between 2920-3020 fps. You will find a couple nodes in that range and it will shoot as good or better than your fire form load.

Good luck and good shooting.

As I stated, this is why I post here. You guy's are a big help in deciding which way to go. I actually used Varget for fire forming because I normally use RL16 i n the Norma Dashers (34.8) . Thought about going with the same load, but want to keep it in the mid range, but if it needs to go fast, then that's what I'll try.Between the fireforming Lapua, and working up a load in the Alpha Brass, I'm already at 350 rnds. Will do some testing, and report back...rsbhunter

My 2 cents. I would work up the load because I would never be satisfied that I was getting the best accuracy possible without systematically working up the load.

I have been working with my Bra at 100. I have 330 shots down the barrel between fireforming Lapua brass and load work up with Alpha brass. I still have 30 pieces of Lapua left to fireform. I figure this is just the cost to do business until I learn more about the bra and my setup. After going through a few barrels, I figure I should be able to get in tune faster.

I am doing some load development, going up .02 grains for a total of .04 . Seating I'm staying at touching , I will try .010, and .025. But like everyone, components and cost, barrels @ $700 , I am minimizing load development , I have gone the route of 4,powders, 3 bullets, 6 powder charges, primers....find the load, change out the barrel !!!!!!rsbhunter

I am the same way, a lot of the time. If I’m starting on a well known round, I pretty well go with the flow and what’s popular, but like with my GT, I have tested many powders, primers, tension and bullets. If it’s new, or new to me, the first barrel is all about experimentation. I have just under 800 rounds on my GT right now, and I’ve found a happy place. Next barrel, I’ll start there and probably stick to it- but the first one is always abused.

I know what you mean...one of my 6mm Norma Dasher has a PVA barrel on it, the other has a Krieger, and they both shoot the same load (easy button). This Dasher I'm loading down, and it seems to be happy with it....But, being reloaders, and perfectionists, we always look for the one hole 1000 yr group...rsbhunter
