Need Reload Data help with .284 win and 7mm rem for 180 vld's

Fixing to start working up loads for me and my dads gun. We both will shoot target out to 1000yd and both hunt.

Both full custom: Both want to shoot 180VLD hunting bullet and Norma brass.
.284win 1-8.5 twist
7mm Rem 1-9 twist

I have both the sierra and lymans manuals. Berger manual is in the mail. Neither of these as any info for a 180gr bullet on either caliber. Hopefully the berger manual will have it.

So far I found some info on the 7mm on an older post this was supposed to come from berger:

http://forum.accurateshooter.com/threads/7mm-rem-mag-powder-for-180-vlds.2474243/

Im hoping to narrow down the powder choices for the 7mm rem, I don't mind loading a different powder in each gun, but hopfully we can try about 4 of the same powders for each gun and make our picks.

.284 win data powders people like H4831SC or H4350 and R17 or h1000

found this good thread: http://forum.accurateshooter.com/threads/284-win-starting-loads.3843341/#post-36393076

Wanted to get some info on where you guys are at with your rifle if shooting one of these with the 180 bergers.

For example: What powder? what was your safe start gr., pressure sign gr. load, then where you backed off and settled in finally with best results.

If you want to give info on seating depth that would be great also.

Would hope to make this one good informative post on these two calibers for future searches for others on this sight:) please chime in.

Thanks
chad

Can't speak to the 7mm Rem. But my .284 has taught me some things I can share.
I prefer the Berger 180 VLD Hybrid Target over the hunting version.
They perform exceptionally well for several of us who rely on .284 competition rifles at our local matches.
I am not a "hot" load supporter. I want the bullet to reach the target at a velocity above the trans-sonic zone but pushing it faster with the risk of flirting with high pressures has never interested me.
I tried RL17. It worked well but it was temperature sensitive and I found myself having to work up loads based upon ambient temperatures so I abandoned that.
While I'd use H4350 in a pinch, I now rely exclusively on H4831SC (51 grains with a CBOL of 2.50 - which is about .005 off the lands) but your chamber will not produce the same results so, even if you work in or around those numbers, don't expect a utopian performance.
As any reloading manual will tell you, start low and move up. Don't make the mistake of believing that more is necessarily better.

Hodgdon's online reloading manual has info for the 7 Rem Mag and 180 Bergers. I'd lean towards H1000 for that gun, H4831 is a bit fast burning and will give you less velocity before you hit pressure.

H4831 is the go to powder for lots of 284 shooters. Pay attention to their OAL though, since most of these guys have their guns throated long for the 180's and that can make a difference in whether their load is safe in your gun.

I have shot this load from 20 to 90 degrees and have never been disappointed.
I do have my barrel throated long for the 180 hybrid. Where the boat tail starts
is half way out the neck, between the mouth and the shoulder-neck junction.
O.A.L started about 3.280 but now I shoot at 3.290 to 3.295 after 700 rounds.

RL-17 53.5 gr SD=1
3 shot groups

She opened up at 54 gr and I only shot two shots as SD went to haywire
but 53 to 53.5 shot great.

this load broke an egg last Saturday at 1428 yards on the 6 th shot

REPLY TO BIRDOG,

I am almost producing the same results, EXCEPT my charge is good with 52.5 grains of RL17. Last time shot, scored a 595/600 @ 600 yards.

Series 1 Shots: 4
Min 2920
Max 2922
Avg 2921
S-D 1
ES 2

BR2 CCI, 52.5 grains of RL17 Powder
180 Hybrids, Shot out of a 9 twist McGowen Barrel
Lapua Brass
.050 off the lands

RESULTS:
Series Shot Speed
1 1 2922 ft/sec
1 2 2920 ft/sec
1 3 2922 ft/sec
1 4 2920 ft/sec

For the 284 I have tried RL17, H4831sc and H4350. All have done well with the 180s and the best has depended on the rifle. I or friends have worked with six rifles from the same reamer aND we have found no consistent best. I would say for us H4831sc has been tops most often with H4350 second. We shoot Hydrids and either 30 or 50 thousandths jump has been the sweet spot.

For H4831sc I would start around 53 grains and work up. H4350 and RL17 I would start at 51. I was blowing primers are 53 grains of RL17 so be careful. My current rifle likes 51.6 grains oh H4350 with F210some. I am getting 2825 with es less than 5 and .25 moa vertical at 1k yards.

Dennis, how long is your barrel? That is some great speed.

28", 1.00" Bull Barrel, 11 deg crown, Stock Savage Action, SSS HBR stock.

As far as the SD & ES listed above, With the load stated, these numbers have never been over 6. Speed is very consistent as per the above post.

I live in the south, so temperature doesn't bother us much. I have never shot it below 60 degs and up to 90 to 92 deg's.

One load on the 284 LINK said 56.2 gr of 4831sc.????..I can't see 56.2 gr of 4831sc working too long in 284 brass. Thats Way too hot....primer pockets will suffer badly. Especially on Norma brass

Once I went past 53.0 grains of any powder, I had serious pressure problems. 56.2, well let's say I shot maybe 3 rounds with almost 54.0 grains and I unloaded the rest when I went home.

for the 7 rifles I load for we use 67grs h-1000 with 180gr bergers. all rifles are Remington 700 26in barrels. they go 2850fps to 2950fps depends on barrels! seat 10 off rifing. all of them go to 1400yds and 2 have went to a mile. all of the barrels have been hand lapped and had bore coat put in them. we use no brushes and they clean up in 3 to 5 patches with K-G products. h-1000 burns very clean.
