Need QL help

I have been working with Quick Load for several years, and on most occasions it is very close, all things considered. Now I'm working up possible loads for my Palma rifle and referring to known loads that I have either shot or that my partner shot using the exact same equipment. The problem is at least one of the parameters is off to the extent that I'm getting a 75-150 fps. difference between what QL says and what I know to be accurate data. I know it is accurate because I reverse engineer the numbers so to speak, and they are very close in real time as opposed to QL. To rule out one variable, I re-weighed the H2O capacity of the brass and found that to be off by 1.4 gr. Other than that, I'm at a loss. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Lloyd,

I've found QL to be off a bit with Varget in the 308. I have to adjust the Ba up to about 6500 to get the data to match up reliably. At first, I thought it was just the lot of powder I was using, later I learned that it was the 308 and Varget that caused the issue.

In the process I learned to try to not only match velocities, but also pressures. I look for ejector marks when QL predicts >65 ksi.

The other thought I want to throw out there is barrel bore size. Tighter barrels will make more pressure and velocity for a lesser charge. Perhaps a change to bore area would be in order?

We've seen differences in barrels, with the same load, same caliber, up to 100 fps. QL can't account for that except through the tweaking factor. The 1.4 grains difference in case capacity can certainly make a difference!

You should definitely modify the case capacity value to what you actually measure with your brass.

Another factor people forget is the temp calculation. There is a temp button that you should adjust if you are shooting in cold or hot weather.

Also, I have generally gotten better results using ADI 2208 data rather than Varget. Same powder, slightly different data sets. You can select ADI 2208 from the pull-down menu of powders.

I appreciate the responses, but 1. I don't shoot Varget. 2. The difference in velocities seem to be consistent regardless of what powder/charge/bullet I plug in. Changing the H2O helped some, but it is still very slow to known velocities that I have shot with a given load. For that matter, my shooting partner and I are with-in 20-30 fps. of each other shooting at the same location at the same time. Lastly Mr. Forum boss, can you steer me to where the temp. button is?
Thanks,
Lloyd

Bill,
If you are talking about the box that says "Selected Propelent: :File/qloadfw. There is no place designated as temp change that I can see.

Oops, you gotta click the box left of the powder choice, THEN the bottom left button appears. At this point you can also edit the Ba.
