Need probable ring height for my NF

This is my first NF and has the 56mm obj. Looking to strap this on a Rem 700 of some persuasion with varmint wgt bbl or something near a no taper on a 6PPC 700. What hgt rings should I need? I'm guessing either high or ex high. I do know how to figure to the C/L but it isn't here yet and just curious as to your experiences. The lower it's mounted the better for me.

I have been very partial to the Burris Sig rings for the last 10 years.........any reason not to continue with same? If so, what would you recommend and why?

med or low tps will work. look at their specs to find the dimensions.
my buddy switched to low rings on his 700 5r with a 56 mm nightforce.

How many times does this question get asked on shooting forums around the universe? Way too many. And almost as many times, the quick answers are bogus.

Mounting a scope depends on FOUR key elements, people. Pull your heads out of your rear rest and think about it.

1) Outer diameter of objective lens assembly. Measure it yourself, or look it up in the specs provided by most manufacturers.

2) Desired clearance of the objective bell on the barrel of the rifle in question. Some barrels have no taper, and huge diameters. Others have significant taper and relatively small diameters. Rifle A will be different than Rifle B. Plan accordingly, for YOUR rifle, not somebody else's.

3) Base type and thickness. NONE of the manufacturers use the same specs as another. They're ALL different. Figure out what dimension you need, and plan accordingly. Redfield vs. Weaver vs. Picatinny. Taper vs. Flat. Get the thickness from the mfg. specs. If they don't publish it, and quite a few don't, then contact them and ask, or measure it at the store.

4) Ring type and height. Saved this for last. Because you MUST know all of the above to gauge the desired or requisite ring height. If the base is way thick, you'll be able to use lower rings than you would with a thinner base. And NONE of the ring manufacturers use the same dimensions to enable words like "Low" or "Medium" to have any correlation between brands.

Summary: Do the MATH. Understand it's a system. Measure. Understand the relationships between the dimensions. Pick accordingly. As to objective bell clearance, I like 1/8". However, clearance is a subjective thing, and if your stock features an adjustable comb height (via the cheekpiece), then clearance is somewhat less problematic. Now go do your homework. 8)

I have a Remington 700 with a Kreiger heavy palma barrel on it with an EGW base. I use high Burris Signature rings on my 12 X 42 Nightforce scope and have a little over 3/16" barrel clearance.

Well good luck.

I just got a Sightron SIII with the 60 mm bell and after researching many hours I have concluded its a crap shoot at best if you are ordering the stuff. You would be much better off going to some place that has all the stuff on hand and trying it to find out what works.

I live in the middle of no where so I have to order everything in.

I was able to use a friends Sightron to measure how much ring height I needed before I ordered anything. I figured I needed .5 inches in ring height to clear the barrel and give me just a little room for the scope covers that Sightron provides. I have Leupold bases on the 700 already. I like the Burris Signature rings so I research them on the Burris site.

Confusion. On their chart of Signature rings it says the highest you can get in 30mm is .420. Looking down the chart you find the Zee rings, 30mm and it says "incl. sig." .582. What is this "incl. sig." mean? In hind sight I should have called Burris to find out exactly what the measurement is on both.

So now what? Trying to save a buck, I went to the Leopold site and looked at what was available from them for 30mm rings to hook up to the bases. Total confusion again. It says on their site that the Super or Extra high, (can't recall) is .9 or 1 inch!! No way. Maybe someone can explain this but I have no clue what leupold is referring to with this measurement.

So I looked at rings at Midway. Found the super high 30mm Leupold rings on their site and it said .5 inch in height. Perfect right.......................NOPE.

Got them in a few days later and they were in fact .4 inches in height. Too low.

So totally frustrated, I shimmed the bases for now. Eventually, I will go to the EGW one piece base and Burris Zee rings that I know will be high enough.

"Tactical" rings are another game entirely. It seems they are made for AR applications. My buddy used mediums on his Sightron and they were .5 inches high.

I really thank those that read my post and offered their experiences..........I now have it in hand so the dial cals are coming out and will see what particular idiosyncrasies I'll run into.

NH - that was a nice tutorial and I'm sure that many will read it and benefit - :)) I beat a similar drum on other boards re wind flags and group measurements.

Again, thanks to all.
