Need Pistol Advice

Hi Guys,

I want to get a bolt action pistol in a caliber suitable for varmints at reasonbly long range. I don't know much about them though, and I was hoping to get some help.

I don't know what guns are available. I like the HS Precision 2000 VP, but it seems to have a heavy trigger. Apparently Remington no longer makes the XP-100,I couldn't find it on their site or catalog). What guns would you recommend? A custom gun would be ok.

Scopes? Another shooter has recommended the Burris 3-12x handgun scope with ballistic plex. I see on their site that burris will install target knobs. A lot of single shot pistol shooters use rifle scopes, which really surprized me. I do want parallax adjustment, and will be shooting at arbitrary range. What do you think?

Thanks for any help.

Scott

BEEZAUR,
I would look at t/c encore. It is a switch barrel break open action. The trigger can be made to break real clean. Just my .02.

How accurate are the Encores? I worry a bot about case life too.

What does a stainless 15" barreled one run, ballpark.

I called HS Precision this morning, they said it would be 4-6 months for one of their 2000 pistols. It is really tempting to get a T/C in .223 to try this stuff out.

Scott,
Encores can shoot lights out, look on Varmint Al's Eclectic Web Pages. He shoots squirrels with them all the time.

I think you should find someone that will let you shoot both the TC and the XP, I've owned and shot several. The TC has more of a true pistol feel and the XP feels like a rifle with part of the stock missing. They are really different, some people never do like them or get used to them.
I have Chuck Bickett's XP-100 that he built and won the Ohio half scale silhouette State championships with in 6mmBR. I have considered trying an 8-32 Black Diamond, currently on my .243) instead of the 3-9 Burris just for kicks,I don't know if I could keep my eyebrow from interfacing with the scope though. I'll probably settle on the 3x12 Burris though as I have one on the wish list at Midway as I write this. I also have an XP-100 in 7mm08.
Both of mine are tackdrivers especially Chuck's custom, but I'd rather shoot a rifle from a bipod for Varmints and unstructured target/plinking.

As stated above encores can shoot. When i worked at a range years ago they had a silhouette range just around the corner. Most shot T/C. For barrels try SSK if still around. I don't know for sure i've been out of the business for a few years. Another company is VIRGIN VALLEY I think.

Hi I have a 6BR H&S pistol and I love it.I had the trigger adjusted to break at 1 pound and I have a 3x12 burris handgun scope on it.I am new to pistol shooting and can get a 1/2" group out of it at 100 yards off a bipod.I can not wait to try it out on the varmints.

I have a 20 inch 6 br Hart barrel on one of my XP-100 ground hog pistols with a 5.5X22x56 Nightforce on it, and it never gave me a eye brow cut yet.
Some of the 200 yard groups are scarey they are so tight.
It is the shootingest 6br I own so far, but my new BAT actioned rifle now is progress may change all that, I hope so anyway 'O)

I've got a pair of XP's and have gone through several TC's. Both are very nice pistols. I personaly prefer a .223 mid grip XP for varmints. The only problem is you cant see your hits through the scope. Not near as much fun as a heavy rifle for prarie dogs unless you made one real heavy and added a brake.
One of my XP's is a 7BR I picked up cheap about 10 years ago. Someday I'm gonna build a tricked up 6BR out of it.

I use 3x9's but it would be great if somebody made a 15 to 20x with decent eye relief.

Jeff,
The best thing to do is get you a 4.5x14, preferably a Leupold or Nikon. I've used all the pistol type scopes and hate em! Nothing worse than not being able to see that old groundhog!:D They used to die of old age before I could find them in a pistol scope.....
