Need info. Trying to get better groups with my .308

I'm shooting a Winchester Model 70 .308 Heavy Varmint, shooting 45grs of RL15/CCI BR-2 primers pushing a 175 SMK. I'm getting 1/2moa at 400yrds I have not shot this load at any longer distances. I was shooting 44grs Varget and could stay right under 1moa,9.4") at 1000yrds with it,with good conditions). I'm hoping the RL15 might help me just a bit. I would love to get it into the 6"-7" at 1000yrds.

Here's the question; Will just neck sizing my cases improve, shrink) the size of my groups? I always full length resize my case after each shot. I know by doing this I'm working my brass a lot. By using the Lee Collet Neck Sizer Dies how much if any improvement should I expect my groups to shrink on average if any? I'm full length sizing & getting groups in the .4 constantly @ 100yrds. Can I expect to hit the .3's just by neck sizing?

Any info will definitely be great.

If i had a 308 load that was shooting 1/2 moa 2 inches at 400 i would leave it alone and keep shooting that load. If you are wondering about necksized loads i would start with the load you are shooting and see what happens evey gun is different

Wow! Your loads are already doing very well. :thumb:

Neck sizing may or may not improve things. Switching to a higher quality bullet, or spiffing up the tip on that SMK "might" help. You're at the point where you're fine-tuning what is already excellent performance.

If ya cut the 9"/1000 yard group by much, let us know how ya did it! ;) I imagine you've already read the .308 guide on the front page?

Regards, Guy

Archer, try switching to 210M primers. I didn't have much luck using the BR2's with RE15 in my HBV. What velocities are you getting with that load and at what temp?

Also, just for hockies and grins, drop the powder to 44.7 grains and try 190's. I think you will be suprised.

I'm shooting the same gun as yourself with no modifications except a trigger job that I did. I'm shooting the 168's @ 2.25" at 500 yds. I tried the 190's and the 200's with no luck. I neck size my cases and use 46grs. of blc-2 and a cci 250 set out far enough that the gun is a single shot. I ask my gunsmith if he knew of anything elese to try and he said leave well enough alone!!!!!

Archermike,I think the best thing you could do,is to buy a copy of
Richard Lees, Reloading Manual, and if you spend a bit of time
with it, I am sure you will see lots of things to improve your groups. one of the main things you will notice is all the top
shooters spend a lot of time fire forming there cases, then treat them like gold,He states that factory ammo is made to fit all
rifles and therefore may well be a loose fit in your chamber,
so if you resize every time you are turning your cases back to
factory sizes and wasting a perfect fit for your chamber.
Regards Derrick.
