9CE5CDEF-A550-465B-9488-33D93003012C.jpeg DEC0020C-2340-434C-8BB5-1E2BF33D5BAC.jpeg Hello, I have come to this site specifically because it has experienced people on 6MM varmit rifles.
My family has a 244 (6MM) Remington varmit rifle and am trying to place a fair value to sell for my mother in law. The rifle belonged to my wife’s father whom was a long distance shooter and reloader often at camp Perry. Since he was a stickler for precision I have the information on the rifle as his records have them written. The rifle is a 1950 Remington rifle w/12X weaver scope w/dual cross hairs. The action is Mauser w/jeweled checkered bolt. The trigger has a shoe on it and has been tuned to 2 1/2 lbs. The barrel is a 26” medium heavy barrel. The stock is custom made by his father with a cheek piece and is made of walnut w/maple spacers and a walnut cap. The butt plate has a walnut color spacer. I believe this rifles barrel has been glass beaded into the wood as his notes say. The rifle also has a leather shoulder strap. Overall this rifle is in amazing condition. I apologize if I have not specified something correctly, I am clearly outside my lane of experience. I appreciate anyone’s time as we try to obtain a fair market value. Thank you all in advance.

1950-60's custom Mausers I would think are worth $500 or so unless a famous gunsmith did the work and it is so marked. Pope, Neider, Griffin and Howe, Ackley, etc. Details on barrel and receiver markings would help.

Hi just say mo,
Thank you for taking your time to comment. The only marking on the barrel is on the left side just above the stock it has 6MM. The only other marking is the serial number on the receiver. I suppose under the stock may be other markings but I obviously do not want to venture there. Thank you again for your time.

Have you browsed Gun Broker for something similar? Those Mausers can have a cult like following, my advice would be to join 24 hour campfire(a forum) and ask there.

Thank you Milo for your comment and time. Great advice I suppose the Mauser action is popular. I just thought there was a stronger following for 6MM in this forum. I appreciate the advice. Thanks for your time.

There a lot of knowledgeable guys here that may be able to help, someone will come along, it is just not me.

That scope, if it is a Weaver K-12 as it appears to be, in pristine condition might go for 150 -200 bucks.

Both scope and rifle would be a sweetheart for the particular guy who loves and appreciates that style and vintage. A proof target might help your value, if it groups well.

Nice old rifles like that one are usually worth a lot more than you can get for them.:( Good luck young man. jd

if you go to gunbroker, it has a search you can do for completed auctions, of course you want to compare completed auction that have sold, not completed auctions that people are asking way to much and the listing just expires. I think this rilfe is more of a hunting style with a heavy barrel, and most of the 6mm talk on this site is about 6br, not 6mm rem.. I happen to have both, but not in a mauser action. so I'm not much help either. as Milo said maybe somebody with more knowledge will come along.

Thank you JDs Holler for your time and I appreciate your insight and knowledge and respect your opinion. I know this shot well as he was quite the expert and loved ground hog targeting. Thank you again for your time.

Thank you for your time and advice chuck shooter, can you tell me what a 6BR is?

Do you have a Cabella's store near you? They will examine the gun, tell you what its fair value is, and offer you 2/3 of that value. If it was a factory rifle (not a custom) their appraisal would come straight from the Blue Book Of Gun Values, and they will explain how they came up with a figure. But a custom is not so straightforward. Still, it's a way to get one figure, a stake in the ground. I feel Cabella's will likely be fairer than an independent gun shop, but that's just my opinion.

Brian’s356, I did not know they do that. This forum was as I suspected filled with people offering their time and great suggestions. I appreciate the insight and experience you share. Thank you for the great information.

Hello Aussi1: That’s a very nice looking gun. Knowing the twist rate of the barrel would help in valuing the gun.
As it sits, I’d give $6-800 for it.
Gunbroker sales can be a little quirky. Presentation means a lot! Get some red velvet to lay the gun on and take some good pictures (lots of light). Take your time to do a good write up(use “custom” and “collector piece” a lot). Put it on Gunbroker for $1850 and see what happens. Some guy might fall in love with it! Make sure you put a starting bid of $1600. What have you lost if it doesn’t sell? Milo is right. Those Mauser guys might go gaga over it!
I hope Ggmac chimes in. He’s our resident Mauser expert.;)

that is a beautiful rifle and was said its worth way more than you'll ever get sadly. you have an offer for 6-800 for it which is more than id guess it was ever worth. those rifles were works of art and that one is no different- but without a famous maker's name on it that really hurts the value. there will be nothing under the barrel so there's no reason to venture there for sure. if you could post some better pictures here you'll get a buyer for a fair price- way more than you'd get on gunbroker paying fees, etc. there are no more knowledgeable shooters/gun guys on the web as there are here.

A better pic of the action could really help . The trigger could have more than a shoe on it , it could be a Canjar trigger which would increase value .
6 Rem was the go to cartridge , it looks well done . Sorry no coffee yet .

Aussie1, The price of rifle probably won't come near what it worth to the family. I own several rifles that were built by m great uncles, in their custom gun shop. You don't have enough money to buy them from me. In fact two of my rifles are commercial Mauser actions similar to yours and from the same time period. My rifles have Canjar and Timney triggers, along with trigger shoes. One of the stocks, is very similar to yours. My guess is they were purchased as a semi finished stock from maybe Fagen on Bishop's. Heirlooms can give far more satisfaction than the money derived from selling them.

As others have said, about $600 in today’s market unfortunately. It may be an FN Mauser action, but without a close exam, it is impossible to tell. If it is FN add $150. There were literally thousands of these rifles in one configuration or another made during the 1950s and 60s. My guess is that it was made in the 1960s as Remington changed the name of the 244 to 6mm Remington in the early 1960s. The stock looks more like a Richards than a Fajen or Bishop of the period but could be any. As others have stated, unless it was marked as being assembled by a famous smith, it has little collector value.
