Need Dillion 550B tips and tricks

Good idea seems like alot of added steps for my needs. I am only throwing for a 308win everything else i will be using the powder funnel die

at least try it to see the difference it makes,

this idea works good too when setting up a for a new pistol or 223 loads , when trying to drop exactly 4.0 grains and you keep getting a random 3.9 or a 4.1 ...

pulling the handle 10 times and adjusting until 10 pulls throws 40.5 grain . will basically set the slide to drop right in the middle of a 0.1 grain

i completely understand your logic, but i wont be loading for any pistol or 223, i have basically stuck to 260rem,308win and 6XC for all my needs. And I only need 308win for bulk reloading.

So anything that i can polish up, adjust to make the auto charge throw smoother or more accurate. Or cheap easy upgrades that make the process easier or better faster whatever.

I also thought of a case prep head, for sizing and de priming and another for seating and powder throwing.

I run a Dillon 550 for all my precision rifle loads. Absolutely would not use any other press, from a workflow efficiency perspective. Without being super long winded, here would be my tips for you.

1) Read the 6.5 guys precision rifle progressive press article, watch their corresponding youtube video, and read the Scott Harris article on progressive press loading.
2) Two step process is a MUST imo. One toolhead for brass prep. Then tumble brass clean. Then a second toolhead for loading.
3) Alcohol lanolin lube is your friend.
4) Sizing dies setup should be Deprime die, then FL non-bushing die, then expander mandrel. Pick a die that doesn't oversize the neck too much, maybe only 0.001 or 0.002 past target dimension. Using this three combo of dies is the key to getting low-runout consistent brass.
5) Floating dies on o-rings is very handy, if only to fine tune headspace sizing.
6) Seating depth consistency seems better when seating effort is low. High neck tension will lead to greater inconsistency.

Upgrades I've got and value... bullet tray, strong mount, roller handle, CNC toolheads (flat top surface is easier for the o-ring), LED lighting kit.
For precision weighed charges on a separate scale, check out the Area 419 funnels. The important thing is to avoid any kernels being caught between the external funnel and the internal powder funnel that rests on the case. I fabricated one on the cheap from an MTM universal funnel kit and it's worked well for me.

The only advice I have is to lube your linkages on the press. I inherited a 550b from my Dad and he must have never lubed them. One of the arms pivot holes was somewhat egg shaped. One call to Dillon and I had two new arms in three days. Great Customer service.

Why the Non bushing die???

Concentricity. With bushing dies you have the additional interface of neck alignment vs body alignment vs bushing alignment. I would see some cases that were concentric then the odd outlier that would not be as good. With the non-bushing die everything is dead nuts straight every time.

I use Forster FL dies with the neck honed to about 0.004 under the diameter of a loaded round.

The reason for alcohol/lanolin is that it seems to provide the best consistency in sizing and shoulder bump. It's the same stuff as the Dillon branded lube. It's also well suited to a bulk workflow since a little goes a long way. I can usually do 200-300 cases with 5-6 sprays. I toss all the brass in at once into a big tupperware dish, spray once then swirl them around, repeat. A bit gets into the inside of the neck, enough to lube the mandrel die.

Why the Non bushing die???

will hornady one shot be a good replacement/intermediate since i have 4 cans?

Ive had a few rifle cases get stuck using One Shot so be careful ! PITA when that happens. If your going to use it be very thorough with it and only spray like 30-50 cases at a time. The lanolin/alcohol combo is far superior to One Shot. Never had a stuck case. You need to re-tumble or wipe down cases thoroughly after sizing b/c it gets sticky if left on the case.

Call Dillon they will send you all the parts to make it brand new
They can help with the adjustments to
Be sure to look in the primer tube for corrosion it will create problems
By new primer tubes there cheep

I've had more cases stuck behind Hornady 1-Shot that any other method of lubing cases.

After making that statement, there'll probably be a bunch of replies that it works with no problems from others.
